Leveson report: Labour would consider Royal Charter for watchdog

The Labour Party would consider the idea of a Royal Charter to create a new, independent press watchdog, a senior party source has told the BBC.

But the source said bypassing Parliament was not currently favoured.

This follows reports David Cameron is considering the Royal Charter mechanism. No 10 said only that the PM was considering a range of options.

He wants no new legislation, while Labour and the Lib Dems back statutory underpinning of a new regulator.
