Related: About this forumDiane Abbott to replace John Terry as England captain
After bowing to pressure and removing John Terry from the role of captain of the England football team, the Football Association today announced that he would be replaced by Labour MP Diane Abbott. Mrs Abbott is expected to slot into Terrys role at the centre of defence, significantly strengthening the national squad for the European Championships this summer.
While John Terry is awaiting trial on charges of racial abuse, we dont feel that it is appropriate for him to remain as England captain, said David Bernstein, chairman of the FA. We need a united dressing room and for the national side to have at its helm a figurehead free from any perception of racial prejudice. And what better way to demonstrate our commitment to diversity than to appoint a middle-aged black woman to the role? Plus Dianes form this season has been excellent.
A delighted Mrs Abbott has welcomed her appointment ahead of Euro 2012. The British invented racism sorry, football and we have a proud history of sticking it to foreigners on the pitch. These European powers love playing divide and rule, but we should not play their game we need to counter-attack quickly and get it to our wide men. I give the public my word that this England team will rise up and avenge the European white man for the years of brutal oppression we have suffered in major footballing tournaments.

(20,805 posts)...they are too busy appeasing whomever with their PC bullshit, and stripped a man of his captaincy without benefit of trial or defense...
I am also extremely uneasy with the criminalization of speech, no matter how vile.
I think JT could have been stripped of his captaincy because he's a crap player, not because he's (allegedly) a crap human being.
I am very glad to see Fabio Cappello stand up to the FA and basically tell them FU...
The FA have done themselves no favours in this debacle..they should have just let the process work itself out...
Now they make it look as though they think he is guilty before he has even made it to court...If I were JT I'd start looking at legal options to sue the FA for defamation of character (stop laughing, I'm being serious)...

(1,127 posts)I'm fairly sure that Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate were both barred from selection whilst awaiting trial so only stripping Terry of the captaincy is something of a let-off for him.
Although, we'll need someone to blame when England inevitably screw up and fail to get out of the group stages, who better than a key player with his mind on an upcoming trial and a manager who clearly doesn't give two shits as long as he's getting paid.

(2,863 posts)but the media circus that has surrounded this case leaves me feeling a smidgeon of sympathy for him. Even allowing for an element of racial aggravation the alleged offence is a run of the mill public order violation that carries no prison tariff. Moreover it appears to have been a single remark made in the heat of the match with no pre meditation. People carrying on as though Terry was the footballing equivalent of Adolf Eichmann is just pathetic.
The FA as usual have made a complete lash up of handling the matter. Either they should await the outcome of the trial or else they should issue a blanket ruling that all players accused of criminal offences regardless of whether it is racially aggravated or not should be suspended until the case is resolved.

(14,738 posts)Fabio Capello has resigned as England manager, the Football Association has confirmed. Capello resigned after a meeting with FA chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne at Wembley.
An FA statement read: "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager."
On Monday, the Italian publicly challenged the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.
The FA's statement continued: "The discussions focused on the FA Board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview. In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect.

(20,805 posts)...I don't think they expected Fabio to stand up for his captain the way he did..now England has no Captain, and no Manager less than six months before Euro 2012 starts...Brilliant!!!

(42,239 posts)the cause of failure when / if it occurs.
Terry isn't that much of a miss as captain, he didn't have the support of all the players and is facing trial for the racist abuse of a fellow professional (who happens to be the brother of another England player). I can't imagine that's a happy dressing room, it'd probably be better for team spirit for Terry to stay at home.
Capello was far too conservative as an international manager. He relies too heavily on older, trusted, players who aren't necessarily as good as their younger contemporaries but who are more likely to deal with the pressure of an international tournament (in theory). Except in practice it means going to a World Cup with a squad full of older players, tired from a full season of football who aren't physically able to cope with the demands of the international game whilst younger, better players are left at home.

(2,863 posts)Usual media Circus where the press run the national football team not the FA or the England coach. I see the old cry that the country requires a 'patriot' as manager has made comeback in those same newspapers who only a decade ago were clamouring for a foreign coach because the Englishmen chosen for the job such as Taylor, Keegan or Mclaren were felt to be 'turnips' and a sophisticated foreign coach was the only hope. If that had been enough to win tournaments then Keeagan would have been a world beater rather than an abject failure.
The cold stats show that Capello was a highly competent coach who got his team to win most of their games and to qualify for the final stages of International competitions. What he could not achieve was the miracle of taking the relatively small pool of English players in the Premier League and turning them into world beaters. However, one suspects that task will prove to be beyond the capabilities of his successor no matter how 'patriotic' he happens to be. The truth is that Capello is just one of the many foreign mercenaries who saw the English game as a source of lucrative income. This fact seems to be largely lost on most of the shit for brain English football fans who seem quite happy to turn up to support their local club sides stuffed to the gills with expensive imported players loyal only as far as the next pay cheque yet cry foul if a foreigner is selected as England coach. But then this is the sort of intellectual disconnect that one would expect from a nation that is encouraged to look up its collective arse and constantly proclaim how wonderful is the view.

Harry Redknapp should replace Fabio Capello - Rooney.
England striker Wayne Rooney has backed Harry Redknapp to succeed Fabio Capello as manager of the national team.
Capello resigned on Wednesday night, hours after Tottenham boss Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges.
Manchester United striker Rooney said on Twitter : "Got to be English to replace him. Harry Redknapp for me."
Former England striker Gary Lineker and Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill have also said they believe Redknapp should be given the job.

(2,863 posts)He has only just been acquitted after a 6 year tax fraud investigation. Would the FA have supported him in the same way as his club Tottenham Hotspur through such a trial ? All the evidence suggests not.

(2,863 posts)so long as they are in small used notes and untraceable.
Well, nobody will be able to accuse them of lack of commitment and, given the low level of expectations after the last fiasco, any small success would be more than welcome.
Of course, he's the first Sex Pistols fan to manage England, so it's possible there will be some adjustments to the National Anthem.
