Call for soft drink sugar tax in Budget

Leading medical bodies are calling for a 20p-per-litre levy on soft drinks to be included in this year's Budget.

More than 60 organisations, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, are backing the recommendation by food and farming charity Sustain.

They say it would raise £1bn a year in duty to fund free fruit and meals in schools to improve children's health.

The soft drinks industry says raising taxation is unnecessary.

less obesity=less health care costs. Obvious.
less sickness more wellness should be the mantra

In New York City-
90% of people used to smoke IMHO
90% of people now don't smoke IMHO
(thanks in major part due to the fact that one cannot smoke almost anywhere in NYC, thank The Lord for that, my clothes used to reek.)IMHO

and cigarettes are very expensive.(should be triple the price)
(they should also do this for bullets, put a $1000 a bullet tax, then one doesn't have to bother with doing things about new guns)

bravo to the UK for doing this too.

Every state should.

in my opinion, of course you are free to disagree.

Or please pull them.

but I added IMHO if it wasn't clear it was an opinion. I thought it was obvious.

BTW-if you see a 90minute movie, why in hell would anyone need a 48 ounce soda with a refill?
Get a refill, it is 96 ounces. That is 12 full glasses in 90 minutes.

Those of us here in NYC like the pro-wellness that is taking over the city.
From the concrete oasis in the Broadway district (full pedestrian mall) to the bike lanes,to the soda restriction of some places.

And those that want 48 ounce sodas, are free to buy 24ounces twice.
But most people don't.
Because well, they don't need to drink so much in a short sitting and they never really need the 48 ounces in the first place, so making it a little harder saves calories.

By the way, one serving of a soda is 12 ounces and 130 calories. Multiply that by 4 to equal 48 ounces, it is 520.Get a free refill, it is 1040.
Drinking just one 24 ounce is still alot at 260. But you save 780 calories from the effort, which is alot of calories to save in a 90 minute sitting.
And they are empty calories at that.

... not "In my opinion, people are becoming/ will become less obese".

It's surely too soon to know.

but it is obvious
if one takes in 4000 calories a day, one will be obese

if one limits themselves to a grand total of 1500-2000, they will lose weight quickly,
and not be obese

and the poorest citizens cannot get to doctors here in America (in 2014 they will have access that is not now) and now only go when seirously sick to an emergency room.

Therefore they have not in the past practiced wellness.

I would think Michelle Obama's constant talk has helped, and the states like NY and California that promote it help.

If I had to guess, when walking the streets of NYC, the vast majority of obviously obesee people would be tourists, who probably hadn't walked a mile in the last 20 years, but do so when in NYC though they don't realize it.

Any NYC person that takes the train, knows just walking up a flight of stairs helps.

But yes, its too early to know officially about the 48 ounce soda, as that is just starting.

What is known is that Coke has started ads that for the first time talk about obesity and calories in their regular sodas.

And that many stores are by themselves, and not under the umbrella of what the health department is banning, are removing the large sodas.

No one needs 48 ounces and a refill.
You are still permitted to buy 2 24's.
However, most people don't do it.

and as health care in the US is a major issue, and the costs involved, all people are part of the discussion.
Person B with no insurance and obese, costs me money in being a taxpayer who pays the costs of these things, one way or another.

Which is why I applaud President and Mrs. Obama, and Mike Bloomberg and Jerry Brown for their work in trying to eradicate obesity.

btw-the UK doesn't have the same problems, because you have universal health care.

But look at France- they have the best health care, and everybody in france is skinny.
And they have the best food in the world, and most fattening.
But they don't eat between meals, and they don't drink that much soda.
And they walk,walk,walk.

therefore their calorie intake is so much less by far. And it shows.

Which is why in Europe, you can always tell the American citizen.(aside from the loud shirts of course).
(it's like we can tell the folks from the UK by their total lack of sun and the speedos at waterparks

Many issues behind this. The one I find most noticeable is the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of many people.

And our dearly beloved government is trying to dismantle universal health care at the moment.

Between 2001-2008, I spent way too much time sitting.
And it caught up last year.
Now its to the gym for 70 minutes a day and a sensible diet, no regular soda,
(just diet soda and mainly water), and trying as hard not to eat snacks and no desserts except for fruit, fruit fruit.

Wish though things like Cherries and other fruit were year round and not seasonal.

I used to be a 48 ounce soda at the movies and big tub of popcorn person.
Then refill on the soda.

And it was coke and gourmet cheese for me. I am an addict of cheese (btw, Stilton and Cheshire are my favorites, two from England).
I would go to the city and go to the good shop that had the freshest, largest selection and regularly spend way too much.
Cut that all out. Because once I start, I keep going.

you can't imagine the amount of calories I was eating. Without thinking about it.

Yeah, in the old days, when I talked politics, it was at the park, or someplace outside.
And in the park, we walked.
