Paul Dacre trolls us all.
Out in the real world, it was a pretty serious week for news. The US was on the brink of budget default, a British court heard how for two years social workers failed to detect the mummified body of a four-year-old starved to death by his mother, and it was claimed that the then Labour health secretary had covered up unnecessary deaths in a NHS hospital six months before the election.
In contrast, the phoney world of Twitter, the London chatterati and left-wing media was gripped 10 days ago by collective hysteria as it became obsessed round-the-clock by one story a five-word headline on page 16 in the Daily Mail.
The screech of axe-grinding was deafening as the paper's enemies gleefully leapt to settle scores.

To answer your question, Paul, because it's a lying, hate filled, homophobic, racist piece of toilet paper that Joseph GÖbbels would have been proud of.

(101,390 posts)He started this bizarre idea that the Labour party should be grovelling to the Mail, even when the paper has always seemed far less likely to either support or at least tolerate a Labour government than, say, The Sun. He spent years branding the Mail as 'typical middle England'. So it's inevitable that the rest of the Labour party will take the opportunity to show the remaining Blairites how wrong their glorious leader was.

(3,425 posts)Growing up I never read the mail on a regular basis, I was a Guardian reader, but as I recall, it was a step above the Mirror. Times have certainly changed.

(14,749 posts)It's not like dirty Dacre will stop bad mouthing the Grauniad at every opportunity because of this, and he certainly wouldn't give the Grauniad a similar platform to defend themselves in his paper.

(41,212 posts)For once, they made one of their vicious, libellous and fundamentally McCarthyite attacks on someone whose son was willing, able, and sufficiently powerful to fight back.
They thought of Ed Miliband, no doubt, as a wimp whom they could walk all over; but in this case, they unleashed more than they bargained for.
The immigrants, poor people, sick and disabled people, relatives of crime victims, innocent relatives of criminals, etc. etc. whom they constantly demonize do not have the same resources, unfortunately. Though the other time they miscalculated was when they tried to bully and demonize Polish immigrants, not realizing that this particular immigrant group had an unusually effective organization with good access to lawyers!
'Do kick people when they're down!' is the motto of the Daily Mail and similar right-wing media. Here it's the tabloids; in America, it is the talkshows.
