A white supremacist who hoped to "ethnically cleanse" Muslims has been told he will serve at least 40 years imprisonment for a terror campaign in which he hunted down a Muslim to murder before he bombed three Midlands mosques aiming to kill and maim worshippers.
Pavlo Lapshyn, 25, came to Britain in April from Ukraine after winning a prize to further his studies. Instead he tried to trigger a race war, fuelled by extremist material on his computer including a video game called "ethnic cleansing" which celebrated racist violence....
His victim was Mohammed Saleem, 82, walking home from a mosque with the aid of a walking stick in Small Heath, Birmingham, just after 10pm.....
Three hundred people would have been in the path of the shrapnel that shot across the car park, leaving nails embedded in tree trunks. But the mosque had temporarily moved prayers back one hour....

(5,105 posts)Apparently it's a part of human nature that refused to evolve out. It takes a reasoning mind (I guess?) to block that kind of reptilian thinking out of consciousness. (In my case, I was raised to be a racist, found it illogical, but still sometimes have to catch myself; indoctrination seems to always be there.)
I would guess those who do things like this imagine they will be cheered, admired and rewarded somewhere, somehow. It's nuts.

I expect we'll soon be seeing The Usual Suspects taking time out from denigrating muslims in order to denigrate Ukrainians without any sense of irony.

(101,361 posts)The story was reported in the news on Sunday and the police immediately said it was not an act of terrorism.
A statement by Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe from West Midlands police said:
Specialist investigators have been working all day and continue to ensure that we maximise every opportunity from the crime scene.
At this stage we are keeping an open mind on a motive. There is no evidence or intelligence to suggest that this is an act of terrorism.
But given the recent spate of attacks on Muslims, it was bizarre the police ruled out terrorism as a motive so early.

West Midlands police have now quietly deleted that quote saying there was no evidence to suggest it was terrorism.

They quickly arrested a 75 year old - he turned out to have nothing to do with it.
It was 3 weeks later they arrested the actual culprit - after a 2nd explosion at Tipton.
