Smog alert in England and Wales as Saharan dust storm smothers south

People across large swaths of England and Wales have been put on high alert over severe levels of air pollution smothering the south coast and several major cities.

Forecasters warned that one of the year's worst smogs would worsen on Wednesday, with air pollution reaching the maximum "very high" level in many parts of southern Britain.

Millions of at-risk people along England's southern coast and Wales should stay indoors if they experience discomfort such as sore eyes or throat, experts warned.

The unusually high levels of air pollution is a result of inland smog and powerful dust storms swept in from the Sahara by strong gales.

My local BBC forecast for Watford says rain later this morning which hopefully will kill some of the dust.

Decent collection of pictures at the Mail link too : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2594730/Health-warning-smog-soars-dangerous-high-country-People-heart-lung-problems-told-avoid-exercise.html

But I didn't know it ever got to England. What I find oddest is that "sa" means "red" in Sumerian and "hara" means "sand".

You can feel it in eyes. ears and throat, and the Sirocco wind can drive you wild.

But of course up there it comes mixed with industrial pollution that's not present here.

We made some music about Calima (Kalima), one version here: http://www.aridisland.com/records/?p=21

(but the soundcloud appears to be down at the moment, or is it my Wordpress interface).
