Sadiq Khan has been chosen as Labour's candidate in the battle to replace Boris Johnson as London Mayor.
The former shadow Justice Secretary beat the veteran Blairite candidate and former Olympics minister Tessa Jowell and four other candidates to win the party's nomination ahead of next May's election.
He is likely to be facing Zac Goldsmith, the odds-on favourite to be chosen as the Conservative party's candidate, who would pose a big challenge to Labour's efforts to win back City Hall after eight years out of power in the capital.
Mr Khan, the son of a bus driver, said he was "overwhelmed and humbled" to be chosen as the Labour candidate as he gave his victory speech at the Royal Festival Hall in central London....

(14,449 posts)Londoners have a vested interest in choosing who they want. Not really our business.

(1,701 posts)It implies that we shouldn't have an opinion about any foreign leader. At any rate, I asked because I thought that the poster of the thread would know more about it than I do, and could inform me about the person who could next be the next mayor of London, not an insignificant job, as I think you would agree.

My own opinion? Sadiq Khan seems to have won by courting Corbyn supporters, and the endorsement of Ken Livingstone played a big part in this. However, I don't think that Labour will be able to beat Zac Goldsmith in the London mayoral contest unless something drastic happens.

(41,208 posts)Although I used to live in London, I haven't in a long time, so don't have a vote there myself.
Khan is a reasonable candidate in my opinion, and probably preferable to the more Blairite Tessa Jowell, who was seen as the favourite.
However, I sadly suspect that Zac Goldsmith, the incredibly rich MP who is the favourite for the Tory nomination, will essentially, ever-so-subtly, ever-so-legally, buy the job for himself.
My current preference since I was asked? OK, welcome to LeftishBrit's fantasy world. Make Jeremy Corbyn Mayor of London - he is IMO much more suited to that than to Labour Party leadership; and give the Labour leadership to any one of the three best candidates for the deputy leadership: Tom Watson, Stella Creasy or Angela Eagle; or better still, to my fantasy Labour leader, Nicola Sturgeon, who for many obvious reasons, such as being leader of a rival party the SNP, wouldn't do it! But none of this is going to happen!
