packet loss issues

I've been having connection problems for about 3 months now. The problems are intermittent, but persistent. Some days everything works fine. Other times, like today, not so much. Online games become unplayable. It took 30 seconds for the screen to load so I could post this query. I've put in a new router, purged my system, gone to a wired connection and had a phone tech out to check my connections. Nothing helps. Pinging a domain (google.com) shows a 50% packet loss. A trace route to DU failed at 2 steps, fibercloud to decanet and core-4 to DU, before connecting. Extensive googling suggests this is a pretty common complaint. Does anyone have any idea what's causing it and/or what the fix might be?

Of course, there is nothing they can do once your data packets are out of their system. I would call them again and have one of their expert techs (Level 2 or something like that) come out to diagnose. I had a similar problem recently, and some minor tweaks to their outside hardware cured my problems.

I see that I'm getting packet loss between me and my ISP. They've already replaced the outside hardware, but it seems we're not done yet. It's a frustrating process.

Are those all in good condition and configured right ? Try your tests with your router out of the loop. Risky I know, but only for a few minutes.

eta: I'm sure you've also done a very thorough malware scan with two apps.

You can probably rule out your PC hardware by pinging directly from your router:

Usually at....
http://192.168.1.1/
or
http://192.168.1.0/

Look for a diagnostic menu and a PING option.

I assume you have already rebooted your modem/bridge? If you are running DSL, make sure all your phones have filters on them, and have your ISP run a line check. For Cable HSI, call them and have them remotely look at your channel signal quality, you may have one of your lines unterminated, causing noise on the channels. U-Verse is really just ADSL-2 in a fancy package, so again, call the Telco. I have no experience with Verizon FiOS, but I am certain they can perform signal quality tests from the main office. If you are on Dial-up.. well, we'll cross that bridge if we get to it...

She replaced teh cable between modem and router. FIOS? Verizon? Think Whidbeytel.
