Download.com: how to use it and not get crappy adware in your downloads

Step One: Go to http://download.cnet.com/windows/

Step Two: Navigate the site to find the file you want.

I'll use Maxthon web browser for an example.

You click "Save", of course, to save the download manager file to your Desktop.

Step Three: You click the download manager file

Step Four: Click "Next Step"

Step Five: Ok, things get a tad tricky now. Look very closely at this screen below

IT WANTS YOU TO INSTALL SEARCH PROTECT FOR CONDUIT. See it ? Unless you really want that adware, click the GRAY "Decline" button. Tricky tricky.

Step Six: Now look very closely at every screen you get after you click the first Decline. They ALL want you to install some adware. Click the GRAY Decline buttons.

EVENTUALLY....you get to a very straightforward screen that allows you to download ONLY the Maxthon file.

Once you download ONLY the Maxthon file, find it on your Desktop and click it to install it.

CONGRATS ! You have now installed ONLY the Maxthon web browser and NO adware.

The key with ALL downloads is to read read read carefully. Almost always that's how you get adware and other crapware.

Any questions ? Good luck.

It uses the same rendering engine as Firefox (webkit) but also has a retro mode that uses the IE rendering engine(trident). It's fast and has very few problems. I have been using it for a long time with no problems. I recommend Maxthon 3. The latest cloud version isn't to my liking. You can use Maxthon without committing to it as your sole browser. You can install it and use it as you like. I like it because it allows me to store my favorites online. I can log into Maxthon on any computer and have my favorites available almost instantly.

They copied an earlier version when they released IE 7 Pro. Almost an exact copy.

One of the best features of Maxthon 3 - no toolbars allowed so even if you click on the wrong box when installing from download dot com, the toolbar gets installed in IE but has no effect on Maxthon.

Whenever possible, ONLY download software from the original developer's site.

If you do a Web search for software, drivers etc. you need, beware of blithely clicking on the first result that comes up - it could have been placed there commercially, and may well lead you on to a site that'll give you a lot more than you bargained for.

Thats even worse IMO. The dl link on PowerISO page has a CNET icon to it's left so I just assumed it redirected to CNET...

I just dl'd from the "direct" link which one might assume is a "safe" (no junk/adware) dl, extracted the contents of the .exe and sure enough there was a $Temp folder that contained sp-downloader.exe--Search Protect by conduit

I'm gonna do some further sleuthing...

At 337k there is no room for spyware. It allows you to mount an .iso file and access it like a dvd/cd.

That way you will have the option of mounting an iso on the right click menu. It is quite handy. I have a Santana concert .iso that I play as a dvd. Once you mount the .iso, Windows sees a media file and asks to autorun.

...I was fairly handily able to disinfect a friends computer using IMDisk to mount the drive as an offline image (which provides a better ability to detect rootkits & it's hiding mechanisms since the target system is offline) point Autoruns to the System Root and User Profile and easily delete all the "nasties".

Thanks again!
