Mea culpa to members of CHaS

As a co-host of CHaS, I strive to 1) stay out of discussions that are beyond my technical depth and 2) give accurate information when I do get involved. The other day, I mistakenly assumed that Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware would take care of viruses. I was incorrect. One must be careful to have an explicit anti-virus application, in addition to MB, SAS or any others similar to it. Of course, my link is only an example of where to find anti-virus programs and it's always best to go directly to the developer's website.

In the future, I won't assume anything and will double-check my information. Thanks all for your patience.

Steve

Is something that encrypts all your files and extorts money from you a virus? Malware? Spyware? All of the above?

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I guess my overall point is, AFAIK, there is no ONE app that takes care of every species of malware. For example, I know of no apps that take care of everything including rootkits. If there is such an animal, someone please advise me. I had always assumed (and you know what they say about assumptions) that Malwarebytes took care of viruses. I was so wrong. That surprised me, but then again, I didn't bother to carefully read their documentation. Live and learn.

Have a great malware-free day.
