Where do I find msconfig?
and if it's gone, how do I change what apps open during boot up?

Right click the Start menu icon in the lower left hand corner of your screen, click Run, type msconfig in there, and hit enter. That gives you the msconfig utility.

(5,935 posts)3. Use the Windows 8 Task Manager instead
Task Manager for Windows 8 includes startup control.
Right click on the task bar, select Task Manager.
Go to the STARTUP tab. From there you can enable and disable program startups (in the STATUS column) .
If you want more info about a particular startup, right click on its name and select SEARCH ONLINE.
