Burning a shareable disc in Rootsmagic 6.

I have only had Windows 7 a few months, and I have only used the CD/DVD drive for viewing stuff. I used to burn stuff a lot on XP or Vista, but for some reason I can not seem to get the hang of it on Win 7.

All of the info is ready to be burned, and there are 2 choices...let RootsMagic burn it for you or do it yourself later. Letting RM burn it is not working correctly. The files are all on the dvd but the menu and starting page picture are in a list. Not correct format.

If I do it later, are these suggestions adequate?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/burn-a-cd-or-dvd-in-windows-explorer

I would think it would have to be the mastered format?

Would it be easier to download a software for burning? I can't find anything on the computer that looks like a burner. Is it built in?

Any tips on an easy program for burning?

This page has a ton of ads so make sure to click a link to one of the 7 mirrored host sites.

For your convenience this is the link to mirror 7 hosted by Imgburn:

After the download has completed and saved, just run it.
Hope this helps

I was checking it out, will probably download it. I did get RootsMagic to copy to the disc successfully. Really looks pretty decent on the CD. Genealogy programs are not famous for their ability to create good CDs. So this looks more than adequate.

I need an easy to use program anyway, and your link looks good. I notice it is hosted at Major Geeks. Since I got a bigtime browser hijacker two days after I got this new computer I use Major Geeks to download.

Thanks for the response.

I know you've solved your problem, but just in case it crops up again.

I like CDBurnerXP: https://cdburnerxp.se/en/home. IMGburn is a good program, but I like the interface on CDBurnerXP slightly better. Both are free, though they would love donations to help support development of the programs.

The CD won't play on my other computer which is Vista. SO...I guess I need to save the file location and do it myself with another program.

These back up programs use terms I am not otherwise familiar with all too often, so I want the easiest one.

I think I will try the Windows Explorer method linked above using the mastered format. I have never ever used a genealogy program that had good back ups or could make good CDs.

So I can't give you any advice about what is happening with it. For me burning a basic data disc is the easiest way to save my data for sharing.

Here are the steps for making one in CDBurnerXP: https://cdburnerxp.se/help/Data/compiledata

I always finalize and verify my CDRs and DVDRs. Finalizing makes them more compatible with other systems and keeps me from accidentally writing additional data without importing the old data, thereby losing the old data. Verifying makes sure that the data was properly written to the disc so I don't get nasty surprises down the road when it's too late to do anything about it.

Hope this helps.

What is the difference between a data file and an ISO file? I have a data file from Rootsmagic with my family tree in text of course, and I added some pictures as well. I assume that is still a data file? I notice the choice is given in CDBurner.

I did use the built in Windows Explorer burner, the option to finalize it. It did not work on my other computer either.

I will try the CDBurner next, then maybe the IMGburn.

It saves the data as a single file but does not actually burn the file to a CD. Later, you can take an ISO file and burn it to a CDR.

I don't think you can access the data in an ISO file without burning it to a CD. ISO files are very useful if you want to make many copies of the same data set but not copy to CDR all at once. You can make an ISO, keep it on your computer and when others ask for a copy, burn it as needed.

What brand CD burner do you have? I had a LG CD/DVD burner in my computer that gave me lots of trouble. It would successfully burn a CD about 50% of the time and fail with no indication of why. Some of the CDRs it claimed to have burned were not readable. I tried various programs, different brands of CDRs and DVDRs, no luck or improvement. In researching the problem I found that particular model of LG burner was problematic for others.

I replaced it with an Asus CD/DVD burner and have not had a failure yet.

In Windows 8, when you open Windows Explorer, and double click on an ISO file, it will mount the file in a virtual DVD drive, and you can access the contents as if they were on a physical DVD in a physical drive. One of the slick tricks I like with Windows 8.

I've only made it to Windows 7 - I wonder if it can do that, too?

Nope, apparently not - I tried opening it with Windows Explorer and it just opens with my CD burning software.

Start by downloading and installing MagicDisc

http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-history.htm

After you install it, it creates a virtual DVD drive and you use it to mount the ISO files. Right click on the tray icon and select the file to mount it in the virtual DVD drive. Don't forget to eject the ISO when you're done.
