Bizarro problem! - some sites think I'm in Mexico!
It started out with Lowes.com - I'd be researching products, try to get back to my search results, get a 404 - Page Not Found error page in Spanish. When I left that page, I was on the Lowes Mexican site and unable to get back to their American site. It's happened over and over. I cleared my Lowes cookies, no change. I can search for products, look at a few then with no warning or change in what I am doing, it goes to the Mexican Lowes site.
That started happening about 3-4 weeks ago. Just now, I was trying to price prescriptions at Costco.com and when I clicked on the Pharmacy link from their main page, suddenly I'm on the Costco.com Mexican page - and I can't get back to their US page!
Obviously something on my computer is doing this, I thought - but my husband tried going to Lowes on his computer, same deal. he'd look at a few things, then suddenly he's in Mexico.
Neither of us are Spanish speakers, so we don't have our computers set to Spanish as a language. Then only thing I do in any language other than English is use Google Translate to translate things INTO English. The only time I've been to Mexico is virtually in Geoguessr.com.
I'm using the latest version of FireFox, but it does it in Internet Explorer, too. On my husband's computer, it does it in Chrome as well.
Any ideas on how to find out what is sending us to Mexico and how to stop it?

(37,457 posts)have you both scanned your computers for viruses and malware ?

(34,137 posts)The computers are regularly scanned for viruses but I guess it's time to scan for malware. Off to get Malwarebytes...

(34,137 posts)I went back to Costco.com, managed to look up some of the stuff in the Pharmacy I needed to, then when I tried to get to a different page, I was back in Mexico.
Just rescanned with Malwarebytes, nothing malicious.
I'm using Windows Security Essentials. What would you recommend to do an additional scan for viruses if that isn't doing the job?

(8,543 posts)If you go to a site that tells you your public IP address and related info, what does it tell you? For example:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/
Are you using a VPN or Proxy to connect to the internets?
If all seems normal, check your public IP location when the problem is occuring to see if there is any change.
csziggy
(34,137 posts)No VPN or Proxy, but we do go through a DSL "modem". Hmmm - maybe I'll try rebooting that later tonight. I hate to do it in the evening when we're both online and watching IV. We get PrismTV through our internet connection and it all comes through that one box.
CenturyLink does not give us access to that modem like they used to with the straight DSL modem so I can't do anything with the connection between the computers and the modem other than verify it's working. About all CenturyLink lets me do is unplug it and plug it back in after a 30 second count to reset the system. So after my husband goes to bed, I'll do that - but I am pretty sure I've done it at least once since this problem started.

(3,270 posts)It is very possible that your ISP recently purchased a range of IP Addresses that used to be allocated to Mexico.
Navigate to here: http://www.iplocation.net/ and see where it thinks you are located.

(34,137 posts)Which is correct. The fourth thinks I'm in Chesterfield, Missouri.
I'm thinking I might need to call tech support at the ISP and talk to them.

(34,137 posts)Never messed with the DNS cache. I guess that is a step I can try.
Thanks!

(34,137 posts)I followed the directions here: https://documentation.cpanel.net/display/CKB/How+To+Clear+Your+DNS+Cache
I went to Lowes, shopped around, actually found some lamps like what I've been needing (on sale, even) and was putting them into my shopping cart to make a list to take to the store. Then I got the dreaded 404 page not found error and was in the Mexican Lowes' site. I couldn't even go back a page to make a note of the item #s.
This really sucks.

(34,137 posts)I have Firefox for my main browser but it also happens with Internet Explorer. My husband, on another computer (but using the same DSL "modem" to access the internet) has Chrome and IE and it happens on his computer with both of those.
We're both using Windows 7. I have 64 bit Pro, he has 32 bit Home.
I'm thinking it has to be something with the ISP but the two test site noted above do see the correct location (except for the one showing from Missouri, but that is still not Mexico).
What's weird is that it will start out at the USA site, then suddenly jump to the Mexican on, usually after a 404 error page. And sometimes I can't get back to the US site, even if I close my browser and/or reboot the computer, but sometimes I can. Just now, I tried going back to Lowes and got in - and the things I'd been putting in my cart when it jumped to the Mexican site were in the cart. I managed to make the notes I need to take into the store to get those things.
If it did it all the time or with a reproducible series of events, it would be easier to figure out!

(34,137 posts)I wore out Monday night, had to run errands all day yesterday, today I am cooking (two meatloaves in the oven) and catching up on my email.
I did run HijackThis but nothing jumps out at me as being malicious in the list of things it came up with.
I'll have to get back to it another day. At least this morning I missed my call from Microsoft Security. Probably a good thing since I'm ready to give them a piece of my mind. They got hold of my Mom and talked her into giving them her credit card number - charged thousands on her card before my sister caught it. At least the charges were reversed, but what kind of scum steals from a 93 year old widow with dementia?
I told my sister she's going to have to set up a pre-paid card with only the amount Mom needs for monthly expenses. But I am also upset that the fraud division at her credit card company did not catch the fraudulent charges. This is a woman who had not been out of the county where she lives for years - how did they not catch charges from people in India? My credit card company wouldn't let a charge for a magazine subscription with a company in Australia go through and they call when my husband makes his yearly trip to Atlanta!
I'm keeping notes on this kind of stuff for when I get older - I don't have a child to be diligent about checking on things like my sister does for Mom so I will have to set things up to protect myself from being ripped off when I get old and senile!

(25,348 posts)They prey on innocent people like your Mom.

(34,137 posts)I've warned her, my sister's warned her, but she's getting dementia and forgets things.
That's why those people should be completely ashamed of themselves. But they are crooks and have no shame.

(2 posts)Were you ever able to resolve this problem. It only happens on the Lowes web site. Any kind of error throws me to the Lowes Mexican web site and I can't get back. I decided to give up on my laptop and logged onto Lowes on my Iphone. It brought up the Mexican page also. Really frustrating. I have Bitdefender and Malwarebytes for protection but seems like something has gotten past them. Any way to fix?
csziggy
(34,137 posts)When it does, I just bail out and look at Home Depot's site. I don't think it is malware - I think their site is just prone to breaking. By your name, are you in Florida, too? I'm outside of Tallahassee, but one of the times I complained their customer service person thought maybe the IP address was being resolved incorrectly. That really doesn't make sense.
It's really fortunate this wasn't happening while I was building my house!

(2 posts)I have the exact same issue. It seems to happen when some sort of error is encountered such as a search with no results found, but I end up on the Lowes Mexico site. I've contacted Lowes about it and was basically told it was probably something related to my browser and not their web site. I shop on Costco online also but have never encountered this problem on any site other than Lowes. I'm doing a remodel and I can tell you that Home Depot is getting all of my business because I can't order from Lowes in Spanish!
I've tried various scans like Malwarbytes and Bitdefender but can't get rid of this problem. Did you ever find a solution?
