Hard drive capacity

Let's say you have an 8-y.o. laptop with 400GB hard drive. You replace it with a laptop with a 1TB hard drive. You notice it's 80% full with all kinds of pre-loaded software and games.

Is 20% of 1TB enough space left?

My BIL returned a new laptop because he says it was 80% full and felt it was a return after someone loaded a bunch of stuff on it. It's been about 6 years since I bought a new laptop and I don't know what 1TB capacity is vs. 400GB.

Thanks!

It means that there are only 200GB of storage available. It will be necessary to delete programs on the hard drive of the newer laptop.

Something's wrong there.

1 Tb is 1000 Gb. A new laptop even with the preloaded crapware shouldn't have more than 50 or so gigs on it.

i have never seen that much crapware on ANY machine. i still recommend (if you have the skills, time and patience) to wipe the drive and start with a clean OS.
