What's a safe way to shrink a WinXP partition ?
I know there's $$ware to do this, but I will probably never need to do this again -- will install Win7 or switch this machine to Linux first. I have a large HD (230 GB) and only about 18GB in use, so defragmenting should enable me to get by with a much smaller partition. I'm wanting to push WinXP into ~75GB and create two more partitions, but I'd like to be able to do it without reinstalling everything on the current disk.
Isn't there something in Hiren's Boot CD that will do this ? I need something that I know is fairly safe.
I know Linux installers can change partitions, but do they move existing files to the new, smaller partition ?

(2,805 posts)Easeus is another one. http://www.easeus.com/download/epmf-download.html Both are very safe from my testing over the years as free alternatives with the same quality as Acronis which I used to pay for back in the old days.
I notice looking at their websites that they have curtailed some options in the free versions since last I used them. I still like Partition Wizard because if you get into trouble they provide a free version that can be burnt to a blank CD and is bootable to fix a problem if the Windows version messes something up. Valuable when people only had one computer but may not be necessary now but I still like the option.
Partition Wizard has some decent step by steps on their website with screenshots to show the basics. (Minitools is the official website of Partition Wizard and is a safe download (or Majorgeeks). http://www.minitool.com/partition-manager/partition-software-user-guide.html
In your case I think I would use the Split Partition option of PW. http://www.partitionwizard.com/help/split-partition.html Click on your current XP partition of about 230gb and take it down to 75gb or possibly smaller depending on your anticipated needs but no smaller than at least twice used space (In my opinion). So you will get your XP partition to ~75gb and one large partition of ~155gb. Reboot and make sure XP boots OK.
Then you will delete the extra 155gb partition creating 155gb of unallocated space. Then create your two new partitions in the unallocated space. You can do this step in either Partition Wizard or Windows Disk Management as you choose. I think in XP if you use Disk Management you have three separate steps of: deleting the existing 155gb partition, creating the two new partitions and then formatting each of the new partitions to NTFS file system. PW should let you delete the existing 155gb and then create the new partitions but will allow you to select the file format (NTFS) during the creation process. When everything looks correct in the preview hit Apply to complete all the steps.

The only downside is that it raised my expectations of what well-written software can do ... I was quickly back brought down to Earth.
