Need some help/advice please

friends

Well, I was trying to re-activate an online account I had with Vanguard.com. When I attempt to log in, the computer more or less crashes on me and I get error messages.

I called up Vanguard and they asked me what type of computer do I have and I told them an HP Elitebook with Windows 7 pro on it. They told me to buy an Apple. I told them I did not want to buy an Apple as I have a desktop with XP on it and a couple of older laptops with XP on them as well and I can't afford a new Retina nor do I particularly want one -- too $$$ for me.

So, they tried a few other things and nothing would allow me to log into their site (including using IE as my browser whereas I normally use Firefox).

Anyway, no help to get into said account (it has no money in it) and I'm wondering what I should do? Use T. Rowe Price instead? I have an account with them too that has bee there for ages (no money in it either but I can log right into it without any problems at all).

Does anyone else here have an account with Vanguard that you are able to successfully with a Windows based laptop/computer that is capable of logging into vanguard.com or am I on my own with this nightmare of a problem? I tried with the old desktop with XP Pro on it as well and no luck.

Please help if you can. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try installing Firefox 41 or higher or Chrome 4.5 or higher.

If that still doesn't work, call back and get a different support person... the last one seems like a dolt.

By the way - what error message are you getting? Does it have anything to do with SSL or TLS versions?

Best of luck!

The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.

Baffled I am yes, Apple computer no thanks!

I'll call them back tomorrow and hope that I get someone that knows what they are doing I guess.

I am running Firefox version 44 btw. I do not have Chrome and no luck with IE as mentioned.

Thank you for the reply.

No luck still. I couldn't get it to work on the desktop either. I give up. Might call again tomorrow or might just forget it and take that whopping 2.07% being offered on CDs ... (not that Vanguard will be any better ... ).

Thanks again for your help.

Check your settings by opening a new tab and typing (or copying) about:config into the address bar and hitting enter, then into the search field at the top of the configuration page type (or copy) network.http.sendRefererHeader.

The default setting is 2. If it is 0, you are not sending the referrer header to websites. Try setting it to 2 and test your problem site to see if you can log in.

You also might want to make sure network.http.sendSecureXSiteReferrer is set to true and retest your site if you change it.

(If none of that helps, you can set those preferences back to where they were when you're finished.)

Do you have any add-ons that might block information to/from from that website (e.g. NoScript, Ghostery, Adblock plus, etc.)?

My solution for troublesome websites in Firefox is to open them in Opera. If you have the same issue in multiple browsers, the problem might be firewall related if that site is doing something unusual. Also there is a slim chance it could be caused by blocking third-party cookies (setting found under about:preferences#privacy).

It's hard to guess what else might be happening without actually having an account myself.

Good luck.

f/u Vanguard.com
I'll go w/T. Rowe Price as they sell the same product and its doing about the same.

Not sure I care to do this anyway so, TO HELL WITH IT!!

Opera didn't fix the problem (I'm using Opera right now ...).

Thanks again friends!

Those are instructions to reset the browser that will likely fix your issue.

Anyone who tells me to buy an apple I immediately discount as an idiot and move on to the next tech.

You are so right! Not everyone WANTS an Apple computer! I don't! Have everything set-up to work w/Windows. Why would I want one?

I managed to correct a setting for the Elitebook that wasn't being read. Maybe that will help. If not I'll try to reset as you have suggested.

Thanks again!
