"Check Browser Compatibility" - error message from online banking.

It's me here again, Low Tech dude. This Group has always helped me a lot, thanks.

So something has been going on all day. The all day part was that my personalized Home page disappeared, with only the generic Home page showing, but the weird part was that it showed me as Signed In (which should give the personalized page).

Nothing else seemed to be missing until late in the day when I tried to sign in to the online banking. No go, and I made very sure that the LogIn and PW were correct. I don't like to change PWs.

The odd thing was an Option below the error message that had never showed before: "Check Browser Compatibiity." So I tried that, and it gave me a Results page for Firefox that I was using, which showed about three "Incompatible" categories. I tried IE and Edge and got basically the same two and three same Incompatibles.

The categories are: Browser & Version. Operating System. Browser Supported on OS. Javascript Enabled. Cookies Enabled. SSL Key Size. and Display Size.

**********

For Javascript Enabled and Cookies Enabled, the results were "True" for all three.

For SSL Key Size, it was "128 Bits" for all three.

For Display Size, Firefox 1366 x 768; IE 1051 x 591 INCOMPATIBLE; Edge/Chrome 1138 x 640 INCOMPATIBLE.

**************** the all Incompatibles were:

Browser & Version: Firefox 48.0 Incompatible. IE 11.0 Incompatible. Edge/Chrome 51.0 Incompatible.

For Operating System: "WinNT Incompatible" for all three.

For Browser Supported on OS, it was "False Incompatible" for all three

************************************

Dear Group, I have zero idea what all this means, whether there's something in Settings possible, or whether my bank's website will have an answer tomorrow. Thanks in advance for anything.

Although the change in the home page gives me pause. What is your home page set to?

The reason it sounds like a problem with the banks page is it is listing all of the major browsers as incompatible.

Unless it is a dire need to get to the bank page immediately I would wait till tomorrow and see if it fixes itself. Or alternatively call the bank and ask their tech support. They will know or should know if the page is having problems.

It never hurts to run a malware scan. The homepage changing does bother me.

The free version there does a good job of finding and eliminating bugs.

2. Yea, thanks about the bank's problem part. The homepage just went back to working a bit ago.

I'll be following your suggestions with the bank tomorrow. It's not an emergency, but you know, frustrating not getting something done when you want it.

As for malwarebytes, several months ago I did use the free version with some helpful results, but then it seemed to be conflicting with my anti-virus and I uninstalled it, and about a month ago I tried to download the free version for a short time use and it wouldn't download. I might clean out my Cookies for now and maybe try malwarebytes right now. Thanks for everything.

There are infections that will block downloading of popular anti spyware programs.

You could try this instead.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

That is actually a much faster stand alone scan that should not interfere with antivirus. That said it doesn't do as good of a job as malwarebytes but it does sometimes get things malwarebytes will miss. When I work on client machines I typically run both.

And again any time the Home page changes with no input from the user that is usually a sign of some sort of infection. It is possible that the home page itself was changed by the company that owns it and it just looks different.

5. *Morning AFTER* - Well, it just might have been my forgetting/using wrong PW -

This morning the bank people gave me a temporary PW for me to change the PW, and it worked. As I said, I didn't use the "Forgot PW" option because I was sure I was using the correct one, so went off on the wrong track of "Checking Browser" option.

Really, about three months ago the bank forced all of us to switch to more secure PWs, more complicated things harder to remember (yes, I note them down), and it complicated things for me.

I didn't try the malwarebytes this time. Thanks for all the help once again!1

I hadn't installed Chrome so I had to and still only use it to go to the bank website.
