Help! Must choose new internet provider today.
I'm moving - have moved, almost. Haven't shut off services in old residence.
Have DISH Satellite for TV - hate them. Must have someone new.
Have dslextreme for internet. Love them. Only two short interruptions in service over 9 years. Great speed. But a telephone is required for their service. So there is the expensive ATT phone bill while the family doesn't even use landline phone. It also takes ATT about two weeks to hook up with new service.
I won't use cable for the obvious slow traffic reasons and ridiculous prices.
I hate bundles. They are the ultimate screw job after initial honeymoon.
But, ATT, with whom I already have an account offers the U-verse everything. No telephone required. (They own the lines.) They use fiber optic technology which I understand to be just a faster cable. Will there be slow traffic times like there are with cable.
Someone here, please educate me. Anyone have U-verse?
I could also go to DIRECT TV. Get 2 years discount and then just keep my old ATT/dslextreme set up. Or I suppose I could really get suckered and bundle DIRECT TV with the internet provider they offer.
Please, help me decide. I need to do this today.
Thanks in advance for any input.

(102,357 posts)the "blast" service gets you up to 20mbps download speed. Mine is a bit less because I still use Windows XP, but I still routinely get >10mpps.
The slower service they offer is up to 6, I think, but since I really don't watch tv much, I opted to downgrade tv and get the faster internet for the same price.
I know everything is relative (and I'm just coming off two years of relying only on a cellular device for internet, but this certainly seems quite adequate in terms of speed)

(9,314 posts)and I get between 27 and 30 mbps download speed. But, it's a brand new computer with 8 GB of ram which doesn't hurt at all.
Didn't like Comcast for the television cable but have no complaints about my Internet service at all.

(47,675 posts)I've had very few outages of any kind, the service is fast and the original Westell modem is still kicking. Tech support has been excellent on the few occasions I needed it.
