About that bad DNS nonsense that's supposed to be going around . . . .

. . . . I had to deal with it today. Or if not it, then something similar.

I have business class FIOS service. Static IP address. Everything was dandy today until about noon when we lost all outside connectivity. I called Verizon.

The tech went through the usual router-rebooting-pinging-log-in-to-the-router-and-check-this-and-that. Nada.

He then said they had been having issues with several of their DNS addresses (servers?). He had me change my DNS server from what it had been to a special "test" address. I am not sure, but I think it was 4.4.4.0. Or maybe 4.4.2.4. Or something similar with all single digit numbers.

Bingo. Connectivity!

Too bad it was not an allowed number for anything but testing.

He checked with the next tier of service and they gave him a new DNS for me to use. I entered thast into my router, saved it all and Bam! Connected.

It seems FIOS has been handling a lot of this sort of thing. I never did get an answer (that I could understand) from the tech as to what was causing it all.

I think this was related to the thing/virus/bug/whatever that everyone is worried about right now, but not sure.

...have their own DNS servers. I prefer to use an independent service called OpenDNS.

If you have an issue again you may want to give them a try. It's free.

I have been using GRC stuff for quite some time now, and it never ever has a single problem.
All of his stuff is written in Assembly Language, which is clean, and compact.
Steve is a solid guy, and a smart cookie. He really knows what he's doing with this stuff.
Use his site with the assurance that it is one of the best.

4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5, 4.2.2.6
You can try using Google's DNS servers at
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
but they generally as fast as the others.
