Not able to get videos in Multimedia forum
I need some help from someone more knowledgeable about these things than I am....For a little over a month now I have not been able to get the videos from the multimedia forum on this site. I thought at first it was a momentary glitch, but again for well over a month now what shows is a black box with a red arrow icon in the center of it where the video should be, when I click on the arrow I get nothing. Am I blocking cookies from this site? Do I need to download something? Is/has anyone else experienced this? Please help!!

(3,270 posts)If you have recently upgraded to IE 9 and Flash is up to date...Maybe try to uninstall IE 9 to revert back to your previous version. To be fair, Kapersky update failed and would not allow an uninstall to complete. Not sure if that was a cause or coincidence.
Maybe try another browser and see if that works... I've also seen Firefox and Chrome function while IE is busted.

(261 posts)What make and model computer and operating system are you using?
What browser(s) version number(s) have you attempted to view these files on?
Can you view ANY Youtube files OUTSIDE of DU, in Youtube, itself? Have you tried to view Vimeo files or other video files, such as MSNBC or a local tv or newspaper's video clips?
If all was solved by using another browser other than IE, please just let us know the problem is solved.

(103 posts)I have an HP (HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC) 64-bit operating system, with Windows Vista on it. When I found this info I saw that an upgrade was available, I guess I dont need to tell you that I havent done it before, and not sure what I need to upgrade to. I see several are available, Windows 7, an upgrade advisor, etc.
I have Explorer, but when I clicked on "Properties" I couldnt find any version numbers.
I can get youtube when I go there, havent used Vimeo to my knowledge.
Is downloading and using another browser such as firefox going to slow me down?
Do I need to try to uninstall Explorer and reinstall?
If I uninstall it will I lose my connection to the internet?
Thanks again for your help.

You can install Google Chrome browswer or Firefox and use one or both of them instead of Internet Explorer.
Both the Google Chrome browser and the Firefox browser will offer you the opportunity to automatically copy all of your favorite "bookmarks" or links to your favorite sites from your Internet Explorer browser. They will NOT copy your passwords, however, so you will have to "log-in" to sites like DU with your name and password. You will NOT lose connection to the internet by installing either or both of those other browsers.
The other browsers will not slow down your computer. Google Chrome, in fact, is ofen much faster than Internet Explorer. I don't use Firefox regularly, but others who do report that it is also faster than Internet Explorer, too.
To install one of those browsers, just search in Google for "download" and the name of the browser, and follow instructions from that site.
You need not uninstall Internet Explorer. You may leave in on your computer, and use it sometimes. I would, however, suggest using only one browser at a time, since each browser uses some of your available memory.
As to updates to your operating system, Vista, Microsft puts out updates and "fixes" for problems with their operating systems, (Vista, Windows7, Windows8). Follow the instructions for any updates to Vista that Microsoft recommends. I would NOT suggest changing to another version (Windows 7 or 8). It's probably not worth the effort.
I hope that helps. I suspect you will be happy with Google Chrome or Firefox as a browser and will get used to it in a day or to, and you will NOT have problems with viewing media files on DU anymore.
Do let us know if this works.
