...and Instagram and Snapfish and a bunch of others.

I suppose it all depends upon what functionality you're looking for, and which one you think looks the best and is easiest to use.

Also, which one do you want to have use your content to attract advertising and eyeballs in order to enrich its shareholders? You will become the product, who do you want to help get richer? Zuckerberg or Google? Do you want to sell advertising for Yahoo? or Hewlett-Packard? or NewsCorp?

www.Flickr.com Lots of space and generally hassle-free.

It's a Yahoo site now, so if you have Yahoo account that will get you in. Otherwise, sign up at the site.

There are others I looked at that seem pretty good, but the best are aimed at pros showcasing their work.

Although a membership lets you sort your uploaded pictures into albums, lets you more easily delete files and a few other things. I use imgur quite often when I don't want to sign into my photobucket account for some reason (lazy, not on my own computer, on a public wi-fi, etc.), but have never bothered to register an account so I don't know how user friendly their members area is - although most of the site seems really easy to navigate, I imagine the members area is as well.

You can always sign up for a few of the well known free ones and decide which one you like after trying them out. There is a reason there is more than one - people have different ideas on what makes an image hosting site "good".

Found Shack much faster, easier to use.
The only photos I put up are the ones I am using in a post, so I delete some every few months.

For example:
Flickr - easy to use, good for the social aspects, free.
SmugMug - Good for presentations and sales, not free, still easy to use.

I have accounts at both; I use them for two different purposes. I also host pics on my own webserver from my house.

We used to use SnapFish but I think will change to Flickr. Flickr has lots of room and is very easy as other people have mentioned.
Another option is to host yourself. If you have an old 64bit desktop lying around and a router with UPNp try building your own home server that can be access anywhere in the free world with internet connection. Its not hard to set up and you actually own your own data unlike the other free services mentioned.

But, I still use hotmail too. I see no need to jump ship for the "new and shiny" every year or so. Stick with what is working for you.

I've never used a "free" photo hosting site. It's just easier to manage my own and it doesn't cost very much. Give it a thought.
