I'd stay away from the Windows 8 and god forbid Blackberry versions myself.

If you have other Apple products (a Mac or an Iphone), I would definitely get an IPad. If you don't, I would suggest an Android-based tablet - they're cheaper and seem to be more compatible with how a PC works.

The other major decision you'll have is size - full size or mini version. The smaller ones are more portable, but sometimes it's hard to read small text. Sitting in a comfy chair at home and reading the news, I'd like to have a full size tablet. But my eyesight is OK and I like the portability of a smaller tablet, so I got a Nexus 7. I'm quite happy with it. If I was to get a full size Android tablet, something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab would fit the bill.

IPads are a bit more expensive than a comparably sized Android tablet, but not hugely so. Make sure whatever you get, you hold it, see it lit up, try out the keyboard, try it how you think you'll be using it (ie., sitting down, at a table or desk). You may find that one stands out above the rest. You really can't go too far wrong with one of the name brands - Apple, Nexus, Samsung, Asus.

Here's a reasonably current buyer's guide that might help: http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/31/engadget-tablet-buyers-guide-summer-2013/
