Help please. How do I transfer an application to another account in the same computer?
I have an old computer that runs windows vista and I have decided to let my roommate use to write a novel. I have set up a separate account but am unable to transfer the novel writing software to it from my administrator account. The software is free, called yWriter5, and I had downloaded it several years ago. This computer has not been online for a couple of years and when it did, had a land line connection. Needless to say, it no longer has a virus protection program as I have only been using it offline since I've acquired my new computer. I was considering taking the tower up to Staples and let their geeks have at it, but I thought I would ask here first.

(15,888 posts)I tried writing in (the box that opened) to allow the other account but, to no avail. Then I tried the method mentioned below and that worked! Thank you for your help!

(2,805 posts)Is the software is not restricted to any one account--there just is not shortcut to it from All Programs.
From the new account navigate to C:/Program Files and then look for the name of the company(SpaceJock) or the yWriter folder. Go in there and look for the (exe) program file something like yWriter5 if you don't have extensions showing--then right-click it and choose Send to Desktop, which will create a desktop shortcut. Test the shortcut from the desktop.
How did you know that I'm not very computer literate?

Yes, when you create a new account it doesn't create shortcuts in All Programs for everything already installed. I don't know how it decides for programs other than Microsoft programs but it has always seemed fairly random. First time for me when I had a corrupted profile, I thought, "Where did all my programs go?" but I eventually figured it out.
I'm glad you got it sorted.

(8,543 posts)For Windows Vista/7/8, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu contains shortcuts that should show up in all profiles. For things that appear only in a specific profile, C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.
You can add or delete things from those folders to customize what appears in the Start Menu. You can also add folders to organize how the shortcuts are displayed. The ProgramData and AppData folders are by default hidden, so you may have to enable showing hidden files and folders under Windows Explorer's Folder Options to be able to navigate to (or search for) them.
That is the way I do it when a program installs for all users and I don't want a program listed on my limited account. I find it very confusing to keep those windows straight when moving/copying but I appreciate the tip.
You can get to those folders easily if you go to Start and right-click where it says All Programs. Open--opens the current user's Start Menu, and Open All Users--takes you to the folder for all profiles.
