I'm still getting unwanted ads and pop-ups. . .
. . .despite blocking "cookies" and utilizing AdBlock-Plus. I'm also getting unwanted underlinings of certain words that connect to ads.
The culprits here are "Ads by BetterSurf", "Ad Options" and "NP"
The browser involved is Google Chrome.
Some advice, please? Thanks.

http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/eM67XMIE4LcApparently you have something called "Better Surf" (how ironic) installed by a third party somehow. Remove it.
I'm unfamiliar with Chrome, so can't advise further. I use Firefox--block 3rd party cookies, AdBlock Plus addon (w/ subscriptions to EasyPrivacy & Peter Lowe's list available here: https://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions) MVPs hosts file http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm and see nary an ad.
Edit to add: If you have trouble removing this crap thru add/remove in control panel or removing browser add-ons or extensions run these programs from Bleepingcomputer.com:
1) AdwCleaner http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
AdwCleaner is a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers from your computer. By using AdwCleaner you can easily remove many of these types of programs for a better user experience on your computer and while browsing the web.
The types of programs that AdwCleaner targets are typically bundled with free programs that you download from the web...
2) Junkware Removal Tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/
Junkware Removal Tool is a security utility that searches for and removes common adware, toolbars, and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) from your computer. A common tactics among freeware publishers is to offer their products for free, but bundle them with PUPs in order to earn revenue. This tool will help you remove these types of programs.

(16,334 posts)I am trying to clean up my son's laptop and am curious which one you used.

(21,794 posts)But, as I've said, I also used AdBlock Plus. It's free.
If your son's laptop uses Microsoft, you might also try Microsoft Security Systems. It's also free.

(16,334 posts)the junkware removal tool has helped. I thought I had gotten rid of the junk toolbars but the pop ups continued and the toolbars came back.
I ran the junkware removal tool and so far so good. However, it keeps freezing up in Mozilla when I try to search for the adblock plus add on.
Thanks for the link!

I would just reset the browser to initial/factory settings.
