What DVD burner is recommended?
I had Nero installed on a desktop which had two drives, but the software has expired and I'm ready for something new (and also down to one drive). Any suggestions?

(15,882 posts)write DVD's as part of the OS now, and drives are, generally, supported by built-in drivers these days.
Linux is, relatively speaking, without cost, except for some time learning new software. It's quite good, (Linux Mint in varied flavors is a decent choice). You can put it on little flash drives and stick it in a USB port, see if you like it before you change your system.
The suggestion (2x) above is certainly a good one as well.

That's one way - you can also put a blank dvd in the drive and open up explorer, drag some files to that directory and look on the menu above for a "write files to disk" option.
It's not fancy, but those capabilities have been in there since Vista, I think, or maybe XP.
You can go to Youtube and type in "make dvd windows 7", or even just google it, and find a lot of links that might be more informative to your specific install.

Actually, I did download Nero and burned the DVD using the trial period.

(34,825 posts)I've had two in past that didn't last much longer than a year before the drive belts eroded and snapped. Conversely, I've been using two LG optical drives (DVD/RW and DVD/RW DL), and haven't had any issues in the 2 years since I've installed them.
