I got a tough XP problem
2 hard drives on an older XP Pro system (my wife's).
When I added the second drive and installed XP on it the letter it gave the drive was "D".
Now this drive has a corrupt "system" file.
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
When I boot from XP disc and select 'R' for repair console it only gives my the other drive's letter "C" to choose to fix.
Anyway to get to the D to fix it or should I forget it and try a re install?

ON EDIT:
I did do a XP Pro reinstall on the C drive and I can see use the D drive and all of it's files so I know it physically is working.
FYI: The old C drive is 40GB and full. The newer D drive that has the problem is 250GB and very empty.

(15,512 posts)Doesn't like to be copied, transferred, cloned or otherwise disturbed. Can you leave it on the old disk and use the new disk as a data drive, i.e., run both?

(26,366 posts)if that doesn't work reinstall XP on it (it will then be the C drive)
then later add back the old C drive (which will them be D).
Note official support for XP ends April 8th... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx

(2,805 posts)Run a chkdsk on the D: drive and then see if it will boot.
You can do it from C:, in My Computer right-click D: drive and select Properties. Then under the tools tab click the Check Now button. Tick both boxes and hit Start. If it asks to dismount the drive say yes.
BTW is the D: drive SATA or is it also IDE?

(2,805 posts)No SATA drivers for the XP disc. Not sure the best way to get around that.
I just now unplugged the IDE and tried to reinstall XP on the SATA but it doesn't see it.
For the life of me I can't remember how I installed XP Pro on that SATA.

(2,805 posts)You could create an image of C: using something like Macrium Reflect (free version is fine) and then "restore" the image on D:.
Alternatively there should be an option in BIOS under something like SATA Operation where you could change it from ACHI to IDE Emulation or Legacy or such. Then XP should see the drive and let you install. Once you run Windows update it should install the SATA drivers and then you can change back to ACHI mode.
Take a look at Macrium it works well.

(12,471 posts)is to get a $20 drive enclosure, and access it like that, from a USB port. Copy your data from it, then reformat it.
You can find these enclosures from any good etailer like tiger direct or newegg.

(28,136 posts)This is what I love about the DU.
Anywhere else I'd get mocked and crapped on over things I forgot and overlooked with the computer.
You all are the best!
