Cat Sneaks Weed Into Moldova Prison, Proving Once and For All That Catnip Is a Gateway Drug

Authorities say a cat was delivering marijuana to Moldovan prisoners after finding two packages of marijuana strapped to its collar, the Department of Penitentiary Institutions said Friday, according to the Associated Press. They believe someone in the village of Pruncul has been sending the cat, which has been seen entering the facility through a hole in a fence on a regular basis.

That’s just the latest example of cats being used as messengers of contraband goods. In June, security personnel found a cat with cellphones and chargers wrapped around its body perching on a fence at Penal Colony No. 1, near the city of Syktyvkar in the Komi province, 600 miles northeast of Moscow. A white cat was also discovered to be smuggling a saw and drill bits through a prison gate in Brazil last January. And cats have been caught with heroin, once at a prison in the Rostov region of South Russia, as well as in 2010 at a prison in Russia’s Volga Republic of Tatarstan, when a guard dog killed another cat.

Cats: snuggle, don’t smuggle.
