Your Vagina Isn’t Just Too Big, Too Floppy, and Too Hairy—It’s Also Too Brown

BY LINDY WEST
Good news, ladies! Society has discovered another new thing that's wrong with you, which means another opportunity for you to make yourself more attractive for your man. Score! Turns out, the color of your vagina is gross and everyone hates it. So bleach that motherfucker. Bleach it right now!

In this commercial for an Indian product called Clean and Dry Intimate Wash, a (very light-skinned) couple sits down for what would have been a peaceful cup of morning coffee—if the woman's disgusting brown vagina hadn't ruined everything! The dude can't even bring himself look at her. He can't look at his coffee either, because it only reminds him of his wife's dripping, coffee-brown hole! Fortunately, the quick-thinking woman takes a shower, scrubbing her swarthy snatch with Clean and Dry Intimate Wash ("Freshness + Fairness&quot . And poof! Her vadge comes out blinding white like a downy baby lamb (and NOT THE GROSS BLACK KIND) and her husband—whose penis, I can only assume, is literally a light saber—is all, "Hey, lady! Cancel them divorce papers and LET'S BONE."

Needless to say, certain citizens are troubled by this product—which, in addition to just being fucking insane, brings up painful issues about the hierarchy of skin tone within the Indian community. As if it isn't bad enough that darker-skinned people are encouraged to stay out of the sun and invest in skin-bleaching products like Fair & Lovely, and that white actresses are being imported to play Indian people in Bollywood movies, now everyone has to be insecure about the fact that their vaginas happen to be the color that vaginas are??? Splendid! God, I was just saying the other day that my misogyny didn't have enough racism in it.

The practice does exist, as evidenced by the product on offer, and it is--as the article describes--asinine. There's even a YOUTUBE of the commercial at the link, every bit as horrid as the article describes. JEZEBEL, the site in question, is what the site editor calls a "woman's" website that focuses on stories --news, fashion, celebrity--of interest to women. Most of the people who work there (click on the ABOUT link at the bottom of the page at their site) are women.

No one is putting anyone down here, except maybe the total idiots who are selling the stupid bleaching product. Read the whole article--it's making fun of the practice, not glorifying it.

What will they come up with next?

I don't think I want to know the answer to that.

The truth is that styles and tastes change over time because there are PROFITS to be made from marketing new things and making old things less desirable, and men don't give a crap one way or another unless they are TOLD, over and over again, that those sorts of things matter. No man is going to say "I don't want to associate with that woman because she's wearing shoes that have been out of style for two years!" Same goes for women--if they judge another by garments or body parts, they're being very shallow.

Lately, men have been put on the visual hot seat--it used to be you could be fat as Taft, so long as your wallet was equally fat and you drove a fine car. Nowadays, women are more demanding and insist upon the "six pack"--and not of Ballentine Ale, either! But they, too, are being "sold" on the idea that they should demand certain standards, so that the men will run out and buy the Axe cologne and the gym membership and the "ripped" tees and skinny jeans and whatever the latest fads are to look "cool" and attract "the ladies." It's all about the money.

No one cared about bleached this or shaved that or permed this or plucked that way back when--it only became important when SOME OTHER SO-N-SO, looking to make MONEY selling bleach, shaving gear, perm packets, and tweezers and so forth made it an issue and insinuated--like the ad described in the OP did--that it matters.

Mata Hari and Marilyn Monroe, who were the Be-All and End-All of their eras, would be derided as fat and in need of plastic surgery in some corners of this perverse world. Truth is, absent others telling people what's attractive and what isn't, I think most gentlemen would find them quite lovely if they were transported back to their eras.

People need to laugh more at ads, not follow the crowds, feel good in their own skin, and go their own way -- not listen to marketing people who will tell them that they, too, can be beautiful--AFTER they part with their money.
