The ignorance of black history and history in general is so disgusting.

His surrogates are horrible spokespeople. This is why Al Giordano said over and over again: train your representatives on field work, public speaking, etc.

Then he wonders why black people want nothing to do with him

Bernie grew up in a diverse city, as part of a minority, I'll grant him that. But the moment he could, he fled to one of the most lily-white states in the Union.

(My pet theory about that? Fellow activists in NYC and Chicago refused to agree that sexism, homophobia, and racism were secondary to economy, and refused to coddle him on it. So he went a place where those issues weren't front and center - less overt racism because of lack of diversity, and less sexism and homophobia because Vermont was already ahead of the curve on those because of the liberality of the state. How is it courageous to leave places where there's a real struggle going on, and go where there's hardly any struggle?)

Also, Shailene (whom I'd never heard of until this OP) is but a young thing who likely paid no attention to her US or World History courses - if she took any at all - and thus has no real idea of who Mandela and MLK actually were. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shailene_Woodley

I know Sanders was "arrested" back when he was 21 years old, but never spent a second in jail. Held in a gymnasium or armory or something, fined a whopping $25 and sent on his way.

Both of the other two spent a lot more time in jail and actually accomplished something through their protests. I guess Sanders is jealous because Mandela was elected President, but he never will be.

and worked for an end to apartheid in my youth, and who is now living in the US (for the last 2 decades), I think I might perhaps be a bit more qualified to judge this than a young American actress. So, no, Bernie is not like Nelson Mandela. Mandela was part of an organization (the ANC was founded in 1912), and eventually led it. He did not stand on the sidelines and shout; he did not think he could just run for office in his old age and magically get a revolution going. He and his comrades worked at their revolution for decades. He spent 27 years in prison for it. He ended up negotiating for a peaceful revolution with his former enemies.

I don't see a resemblance.

As I mentioned above, my part was really minor. I would not want to claim any credit that is not mine. The people who really won that struggle were the African National Congress, its associated groups like the United Democratic Front, and many others.

Regarding MLK, although there are others who can speak better about him, I do know from teaching him (as well as teaching Gandhi' whose ideas deeply influenced MLK), that I don't see that resemblance either. If you study the method of non-violent non-cooperation, you start to see just how intentional and forceful and organized it is. It's not the kind of revolution that you get from big speeches. There's a depth structure to the method of Satyagraha (which Gandhi ironically developed in South Africa and later also used in India) and MLK's Civil Rights approach, which escapes the casual observer. While we are often captivated by MLK's big speeches, the hard work that was done behind the scenes was where change really happened. And that kind of hard work, organization, and intellectual sophistication I just don't see in Bernie's movement.
