To compare Bernie to Mandela and MLK?!
He changed parties. He didn't give his life to right the wrongs written into the law of the land.

The ignorance of black history and history in general is so disgusting.
His surrogates are horrible spokespeople. This is why Al Giordano said over and over again: train your representatives on field work, public speaking, etc.
Then he wonders why black people want nothing to do with him.

(4,035 posts)Bernie grew up in a diverse city, as part of a minority, I'll grant him that. But the moment he could, he fled to one of the most lily-white states in the Union.
(My pet theory about that? Fellow activists in NYC and Chicago refused to agree that sexism, homophobia, and racism were secondary to economy, and refused to coddle him on it. So he went a place where those issues weren't front and center - less overt racism because of lack of diversity, and less sexism and homophobia because Vermont was already ahead of the curve on those because of the liberality of the state. How is it courageous to leave places where there's a real struggle going on, and go where there's hardly any struggle?)
LiberalFighter
(50,983 posts)But what did he do after that? He didn't stay in Chicago. He didn't go back to Brooklyn. He didn't go anywhere to continue the role he played in Chicago. Instead, he went to Vermont and stayed there the rest of his life.

OTT and inappropriate comparisons seem to be hallmarks of Bernie's campaign.
Also, Shailene (whom I'd never heard of until this OP) is but a young thing who likely paid no attention to her US or World History courses - if she took any at all - and thus has no real idea of who Mandela and MLK actually were. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shailene_Woodley
Still, I too am outraged. Bernie is not fit to share even the same sentence with either, IMO.

And, I feel the same.. they shouldn't even be in the same sentence together.. I am deeply offended and I can only imagine how African Americans would feel about this pathetic attempt to make sanders seem to be more than he is.
But, we get a pretty good idea from the African American tweeter in the OP.. Nerdy Wonka.

(67,782 posts)I know Sanders was "arrested" back when he was 21 years old, but never spent a second in jail. Held in a gymnasium or armory or something, fined a whopping $25 and sent on his way.
Both of the other two spent a lot more time in jail and actually accomplished something through their protests. I guess Sanders is jealous because Mandela was elected President, but he never will be.

He needs to apologize for this kind of absurd rhetoric.

(2,074 posts)and worked for an end to apartheid in my youth, and who is now living in the US (for the last 2 decades), I think I might perhaps be a bit more qualified to judge this than a young American actress. So, no, Bernie is not like Nelson Mandela. Mandela was part of an organization (the ANC was founded in 1912), and eventually led it. He did not stand on the sidelines and shout; he did not think he could just run for office in his old age and magically get a revolution going. He and his comrades worked at their revolution for decades. He spent 27 years in prison for it. He ended up negotiating for a peaceful revolution with his former enemies.
I don't see a resemblance.
misterhighwasted
(9,148 posts)YOU are far more qualified in wisdom & experience than Bernie Sanders. YOU could debate him into the dirt on the subject of knowing what Mandela's legacy involved.
Thank you for the part you played in such an unsettling time in the history.
I wonder who coached her on this blasphemous speech.
She clearly had no idea what she was talking about.
Someday when she looks back at this day, she will feel humiliated by the words she spoke.
Btw, Sanders also idolized Fidel Castro. So there's much for her to learn.
This makes me sick

Talk about taking a free ride on the coattails of those who commit their lives to human rights.

Cha
(297,378 posts)end apartheid, Nonhlanhla.
Sadly, she knows nothing about it or about MLK's struggles and history or she never would have compared sanders to the civil rights icons, MLK Jr and Nelson Mandela.
As I mentioned above, my part was really minor. I would not want to claim any credit that is not mine. The people who really won that struggle were the African National Congress, its associated groups like the United Democratic Front, and many others.
Regarding MLK, although there are others who can speak better about him, I do know from teaching him (as well as teaching Gandhi' whose ideas deeply influenced MLK), that I don't see that resemblance either. If you study the method of non-violent non-cooperation, you start to see just how intentional and forceful and organized it is. It's not the kind of revolution that you get from big speeches. There's a depth structure to the method of Satyagraha (which Gandhi ironically developed in South Africa and later also used in India) and MLK's Civil Rights approach, which escapes the casual observer. While we are often captivated by MLK's big speeches, the hard work that was done behind the scenes was where change really happened. And that kind of hard work, organization, and intellectual sophistication I just don't see in Bernie's movement.

Does she want to play Coretta in a movie? Is this why she's trying to white wash these two men? Shame on her.
She should have picked a white person who fought for economic equality in America. She needs to go to college with all of that money she has made and get a degree in history.
Until such a time - she needs to STFU on black history - domestic and the diaspora.
