Obama: Clintons done well in the contest so far by closely aligning herself with Obama administrations policies, and that could help her again today. In preliminary exit poll results, more than half of Democratic voters in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut say theyd like to see the next president continue Obamas policies, vs. three in 10 who favor a more liberal approach. Obama fans have been a very strong Clinton group in previous Democratic primaries.
Gun policy: Clinton leads Sanders by 20 percentage points in preference to handle gun policy in preliminary exit poll results, with little variation among states today. She beat Sanders by a similar 60-36 percent on this question in New York.
Partisanship: Democrats dominate in todays main primaries, which, like New York, are closed to those not registered as Democrats. Independents a strong group for Sanders have averaged 23 percent across all Democratic contests to date. They account for a smaller share in preliminary results today; well watch to see if that holds. Clintons won nearly two-thirds of Democrats previously, while Sanders has won a similar number of independents.
Race: Race has been a deciding factor in previous primaries. To date, Clinton and Sanders have split white voters essentially evenly, while Clinton has won nonwhites by nearly 3-1. Preliminary results indicates that nonwhites account for a little more than a third of Democratic voters in todays exit poll states, with many more in Maryland than in Pennsylvania or Connecticut.
Age: Young voters whove voted for Sanders in previous primaries by a vast 70-29 percent have made up 17 percent of voters in primaries to date. Today, theyre accounting for only about one in 10 voters in preliminary exit poll results.
Vote in November: Todays preliminary results indicate greater cohesion among Democratic voters than in the Republican contest. Majorities say theyd definitely support either Clinton or Sanders in November, and comparatively fewer say they wouldnt vote for either of them.
