Hillary Clinton

That is it. That's the deal. Hillary is the presumptive nominee.
The people are not converting en masse. The delegates are not suddenly falling the other way. The superdelegates are, surprise surprise, not changing their minds and flocking to the candidate who's been (word deleted) all over their party for months and years. And no, Virginia, there is no indictment fairy. In short, none of the things that need to happen for a Sanders nomination are happening, have happened, or will happen.
At the start of the race, we had an amazing front runner, and a very respectable underdog. Today we have a presumptive nominee, and a very-quickly-growing-less-respectable runner-up. Sanders' respectability has peaked, and he will never, ever be able to leverage the following and reputation he has more than he will be able to right now. He can go to the DNC and say, I'll drop out now if you do this and this.
But the longer he stays in the race, the less leverage he has, thus the less he can put on the table, and thus the less good he can do for the progressive cause.

(11,594 posts)...is a moth in the flame at this point. The question is: how much damage is he willing to do on his way out?
He has planted the Hillary hate in the minds of his supporters--only he can address it. Fortunately time will help ease it, but meanwhile we also must adjust to the unnecessary destructive consequences of his "I'm the greatest" campaign. Outcome not known at this point--I would not put anything past him.

Well said, pandr.. when someone shows you who they are.. believe it. " Mr Crash & Bern is a moth in the flame at this point."

All she would have had to do was call him out on his crap and his supporters and that might have helped to tone it down. As it is.. the more they get away with the worse they'll get.

And the administrators on this site have to fully reinstate the TOS and start enforcing them. The primary season is over, now on to the General Election.

Even if a bunch of republicans crossed over to sabotage our primaries, we never have to worry about some unqualified egomaniac taking over our party!
That's why Democrats have built in safeguards. Smart!

(15,370 posts)Hillary would still be winning. That's the little fact that they can't get through their heads and that Bernie's campaign tries very hard to obscure.
There are 4051 pledged delegates in 2016. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries,_2016
There are an additional 719 unpledged delegates (the SDs), but only 715 of these count as votes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Democratic_Party_superdelegates,_2016
If the election were based on pledged delegates alone, the number required for a majority would NOT include the SDs number. Period.
So all Hillary would need would to win would be a majority of the 4051. 4051/2 = 2025.5 (rounded to = 2026)+1 = 2027.
Per 538, she already has 1,701 pledged delegates, meaning that without SDs, she would need a maximum of 326 more pledged delegates to have a majority +1.
Again per 538, Bernie has 1,417 pledged delegates. Without SDs, he would need a minimum of 610 more pledged delegates to have a majority +1.
He would have to win EVERY single remaining state by HUGE (or YUGE!) margins. That just ain't gonna happen.
It is NOT the SDs who are enabling Hillary's Dem nomination. It is a) her lead in pledged delegates and b) her lead in the popular vote. That is what we should stress. Bernie & Co are trying desperately to obscure the facts here and have managed to confuse everyone. The media have not helped.

(15,370 posts)and we concur on their being a safeguard. But the fact is that it is not because of SDs that Hillary is winning. It is because she is the BEST candidate, has the most pledged delegates, and has three million more popular votes than Bernie right now.
Those leads will continue to increase. So when the SBS whiners keep on whining about SDs being undemocratic - unless, of course, those SDs have the wisdom to bow down before Bernie's greatness even when he trails in pledged delegates and popular votes - please remind them that Hillary IS winning by ALL measures.
