Obama backs national voting day

http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/13/politics/obama-national-voting-day/index.html

President Barack Obama is showing support for making election days a holiday in an effort to increase turnout.
In an interview with Rutgers University's student newspaper published Thursday, Obama was asked by The Daily Targum Editor-in-Chief Dan Corey if it was time for the U.S. to follow in the footsteps of other countries that make election day a national holiday and allow weekend voting.

I think its a very good idea for voters who need to go out and vote......

And one of many photos I will remember that day......with
President Barack Obama and Hillary ......

Obama, Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and members of the national security team receive live updates in the Situation Room of the White House on the mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden on May 1, 2011.

but then I think about other holidays like Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, etc., which have become nothing more than big sales days. I think the best way to increase voting is weekend voting, extended hours at polling places, etc.

Some people work 12 hour days with weekend sometime its hard for them to vote when shifts could be 6am to 6pm like Sunday to Wed.or 7am to 7pm......some state polls are closed by time they get out of work and beat the traffic depending how close you are to home from your job....

As a bill, this could apply only to federal employees; there are no National Holidays in the US, only federal holidays.

What could and SHOULD do is allow voting over several days, or maybe even a week. That would be the best way to make it easier to vote, along with voting by mail.

The whole reason for Election Day being when it is revolves around the needs of farmers. A farmer with no modern technological aids - tractors, automatic sprinklers, herbicides - can't just quit farming for three or four days to ride into town to vote, or for a few weeks to go to the national capital to be an elector. But after the harvest is in and the plow is finally polished up and ready for next spring, he can.

In 2016, we have motor vehicles, airline service, computers, video linkups...IOW we have no NEED to vote in November. Why do we? I can tell you in one word: TRADITION! (One that's engraved into the Constitution, but it's still a tradition.)

Rather than having a National Voting Holiday (which would turn into another shopping day, and keep the people who work retail from getting to the polls), let's declare the first weekend after the Fourth of July to be Voting Weekend. Everyone's feeling patriotic from the Fourth anyway, and voting is the most patriotic thing a person can do. So...let's combine 'em. There'll be a national primary - no fucking caucuses, primaries only - on the first weekend after the First of April (because voting on April Fools Day is bad, m'kay?). Everyone who wins the primary campaigns their ass off for three months. Everyone who wins the general, except the president, takes office on October 1. The president takes office two weeks later.

But let's go one better: NO MIDTERM ELECTIONS! Barring an Act of God - like the GOP doing another Contract on America - Congresscritters get reelected as many times as they want. Nope, in our New Electoral Plan Representatives serve four years per term and Senators eight. We'll split each state's Senate delegation into an "A" and a "B" senator - and every four years, one of them stands for reelection.
