Related: About this forumIt is so nice to see that there are still a few Democrats on the DU.
I had really begun to give up hope for this place, and after having been here for 12 years, had no idea where else I could go.

(373 posts)by certain individuals is so annoying! Some of us are very left wing, we just understand that our political system as designed by the founding fathers is one of checks and balances. It's incredibly difficult to get majorities that can enact great change all at once so you better learn how to win smaller battles that build on each other. A smart progressive wouldn't cut off their nose to spite their face.

(4,187 posts)I'm further left than anyone I know out there in the real world, and I am for Hillary. (And I live, and have always lived, in very liberal areas and have moved in very liberal circles.)
Being for Bernie does not make a person "extreme left". On the contrary, it suggests many other things, most of which are pretty far right. Unfortunately, I can't spell them out, or this post might get hidden.
CajunBlazer
(5,648 posts)Because they are very much the same. The political science Horseshoe Theory explains this phenomenon aptly. According to this widely held theory, the political spectrum should not be viewed as straight line with the the radical left near one extreme and the radical right near the other. Instead the political continuum should be viewed as being horseshoe shaped with the radical left and and radical right being closer together than they are to moderates.
This doesn't describe what they believe, but rather how they are very similar in their outlooks and actions.
Typical characteristics of both the radical right and the radical left:
- A sense that they are ideologically pure.
- A belief that they are superior in their thought process (though have laid claim to a logical thought in years.)
- A view that anyone who doesn't share their beliefs is at best "misguided" or "uninformed"
- A tendency on the left to call anyone more moderate than themselves a conservative or worse, and a tendency on the right to call anyone more moderate than themselves a liberal or worse.
- A tendency to try to silence those with whom they disagree.
- A sense of paranoia - quick to believe in conspiracy theories when their political moves go sour - after all it couldn't possibly by their fault or their candidates fault - its because the "establishment" is out to get them.
Yep, those on the radical left can easily be confused with the those radical right because they act so much alike.

(4,187 posts)I just don't want to think that misogyny and racism are leftist ideals. The only way to make sense of it all is to conclude that those who claim they are the radical left are not, in fact, on the left.
Perhaps those who make up the "radical right" are not really that far right, either? One can only hope.
Seriously, though: if being on the left means caring only about economic "equality" for white men, then what are people like me, who believe that racial and gender equality are just as important as economic equality, to call ourselves?
ETA: I have never considered myself a "moderate" or a "centrist", and I don't want to allow a bunch of Bernie supporters to redefine what being a leftist means.
Il_Coniglietto
(373 posts)The others are more economic populists. Economic inequality demands a revolution!!!!!!!!! But fighting against inequality of the sexes, races, ethnic groups, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, physical/mental abilities, etc. is playing the "______" card
Don't let them define who we are. Damnit, we are the REAL Left! It doesn't matter if it benefits us personally or not. Fighting oppression anywhere and everywhere...it's simply the right thing to do.
athena
(4,187 posts)I agree. I am not going to stop calling myself a leftist just because a bunch of Bernie supporters think they have the authority to define what "the left" is.
I've always considered myself far left. I considered Bernie as a candidate when this started, because I liked his ideas. But the things that eventually turned me off to his campaign were decidedly unprogressive.
I was turned off by hearing that none of the top 10 people on his campaign were women, by his tone-deaf reaction to losing Southern states, by his comment about pro-choice issues not being "what really matters", by the way I saw his campaign dismiss the idea of the first woman president as not very ground-breaking...and this is just a few of the things that I didn't like. So it really pisses me off when people try to claim that HRC supporters are the conservative Republican ones. It seems incredibly hypocritical to claim you're progressive when you consistently put women and minorities second.

But, take courage. Only two weeks to go!

Which, of course, was the intended result of the drumbeat of nonsense, which is sad.
Assuming the hammer falls after June 7th or June 14th or whenever, I suspect a lot of them will starting peeking out again. This place might actually be halfway pleasant again once we can focus on the real task at hand, beating Trump and improving D/R ratios in Congress.

(5,648 posts)With the end being near, Hillary supporters are coming out and confronting the Sanders fans on GD-P and the Sanders fans don't quite know what to make of their opponents reappearance. It is no longer the exclusive Sanders echo chamber that it once was.
In a couple of weeks real Democrats will take back that territory for good, and the Sanders fans can either jump on the Hillary band wagon, keep their thoughts to themselves, or be banned.

(2,029 posts)...as to whether I would vote for the candidate that my party chose. Full disclosure here, I was one of the first in the country to vote for Bernie. Despite having a herniated lumbar disk with excruciating sciatica, I limped into my polling place in NH and pulled the lever for the Senator from our sister state before noon on primary day. I can't really put my finger on when it was that his whole campaign began to put me off, but it didn't take long. I guess as a lapsed Catholic, I'm always suspicious of those "holier than thou" types.
