Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited the famous boardwalk in Atlantic City on Wednesday to highlight Republican rival Donald Trump's casino bankruptcies, warning he would bring the same cutthroat approach to managing the U.S. economy.

Clinton, standing next to the shuttered Trump Plaza casino that Trump once owned, said the real estate developer routinely profited from the financial ruin of workers in the economically depressed seaside resort town.

"The people he's trying to convince to vote for him are the same people he's been exploiting for years - working people, small-business people," Clinton said.

Clinton said Trump’s casino bankruptcies and numerous complaints against him by contractors showed he cannot be trusted to set economic policy from the White House.

"He makes over-the-top promises and says if people trust in him, put their faith in him, he'll deliver," she said. "Then everything falls apart, people get hurt, and Donald gets paid."

The Trump Plaza was one of four casinos Trump once owned in Atlantic City. He left the city after his last bankruptcy..................



.............After the speech, Clinton drove a few blocks to shake hands with dozens of striking workers outside the Trump Taj Mahal, another of the casinos that Trump once owned................

............Trump delayed the announcement of speakers at the Republican National Convention to "let today be devoted to Crooked Hillary and the rigged system under which we live."

The Trump Plaza opened to great fanfare in 1984, as the largest and tallest casino and hotel in Atlantic City. Trump predicted profits from day one, but the plaza hit bumps almost immediately with the departure of a major partner and eventually closed in 2014, long after Trump had sold his stake. Now abandoned and coated in dust and sea salt, its owners say they plan to keep the property closed for another 10 years for tax reasons.

...............Drawing on heaps of recent investigative reporting, Clinton said the story of Plaza is typical of Trump's business ventures.

"When this casino collapsed because of how badly he managed it, hundreds of people lost their jobs, shareholders were wiped out, lenders lost most, contractors -- many of them small businesses -- took heavy losses and many themselves went bust," Clinton said. "But Donald Trump, he walked away with millions."

At the Plaza and other hotels in Atlantic City, Trump reportedly misled regulators, took on more debt than he could handle and underpaid contractors, in some cases driving small businesses to ruin with bills he failed to pay. ...........

........................."He calls himself the king of debt and he earned that title right here in Atlantic City," Clinton said in a speech just steps away from the now-closed Trump Plaza Casino and Hotel. "His bad decisions hurt the whole city."

Marty Rosenberg, a native Atlantic City resident who worked to help build Trump's Taj Mahal casino, introduced the presumptive Democratic nominee and called out Trump's "questionable net worth" and self-touted record as a job-maker. Clinton then honed in on Trump's dealings in the economically distressed city, where four of the presumptive Republican nominee's casino ventures filed for bankruptcy, saying he destroyed small businesses while reaping millions of dollars in profit.

"He doesn't default and go bankrupt as a last resort, he does it over and over again on purpose—even though he knows he will leave others empty-handed while he keeps the plane, the helicopter, the penthouse," Clinton said. "He always rigged it, no matter how his companies performed."

Ahead of the speech on Wednesday, Trump took to social media to defend his record of hotel and casino management, blaming Democratic lawmakers for Atlantic City's recent troubles:
