Cheryl Mills, a trusted Hillary Clinton staffer who oversaw the release of her emails, told House investigators that no work-related messages had been withheld or destroyed to keep them from public eyes — and Mills said she never knowingly mishandled classified information, a source familiar with her testimony told POLITICO.

But raising alarms on the right, Mills, Clinton’s former chief of staff at the State Department, also told the House Select Committee on Benghazi that she reviewed and made suggestions for changes to the government's official, final report on what happened in Benghazi, according to a separate, GOP source familiar with what she said.

The source said it “call[s] into question the ‘independence’” of the report's conclusions.

Mills told the House Select Committee on Benghazi in a closed-door session Thursday that she did not withhold any federal records when she helped oversee the production of thousands of Clinton's emails to the department. Nor did she know of anyone who did.

Her testimony is perhaps the highest-profile interview the panel has conducted since its probe began a year ago. And unlike some of the other staff interviewed, Mills had a direct role in combing through Clinton's emails before they were handed over to the government or destroyed.

Mills, a longtime aide and attorney to the Clintons who as deputy White House counsel helped defend President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial, worked alongside Hillary Clinton’s lead lawyer, David Kendall of Williams & Connolly, to oversee the process of selecting which emails should be saved from a home personal server Clinton used during her State Department tenure. After the Clinton team finished scouring the messages, they had the server wiped clean, deleting the rest of the contents.
