Bernie Sanders arrives at Morehouse to speak to a crowd of 4,500+ voters. #gapol

(1,968 posts)what's an HBCU? Hot-Bedded Caucus University?

(32,342 posts)Morehouse is a rather old and venerable institution of such. I was being a little sarcastic.

(1,968 posts)Er, if so, what's up with that photo up there? 'Cause...I don't really see that much AA representation.
Starry Messenger
(32,342 posts)It's a bit curious.

(32,342 posts)There's some question on Twitter on why the crowd seems to be non-representative of the college itself.

(32,342 posts)It's just a question of where the crowd really came from.

(50,562 posts)If you don't have significant ties to the AA community, Morehouse doesn't accept you. This actually makes a lot of sense: they have fewer than 2400 slots, and there are high demand for them in the AA community. So unless you have a VERY good reason for wanting to go to Morehouse besides "it would be cool to attend a HBCU" (if that's your goal, there are several excellent HBCUs in North Carolina who would love to enroll you), you don't get to go to Morehouse.

(50,562 posts)Morehouse is a private liberal arts university, which is a HBCU, THAT ONLY ENROLLS MEN! In that picture I see several feminine-looking haircuts, and probably more white people than ever attended Morehouse in the history of the school.
Could someone in the vicinity of the next Bernie Rally slip over there and photograph the line of buses?
Starry Messenger
(32,342 posts)On twitter, there is angry pushback about the event being open to others outside the college. That's fine that it was open, but it's kind of disingenuous to bill this tour as the HBCU tour and then pad the crowds with those from outside the college, who do not represent the college.

(42,374 posts)Just wow! A HBCU, they bus in white kids and then brag about the crowds? The Bernie campaign just opened up a new chapter in the book on tone deaf.

(32,342 posts)It's odd to me the campaign chose HCBUs to be the venue for large open rallies, when they made it sound like a listening tour on Black student issues, but that's just me!

(68,867 posts)I feel that whole thing was a form of manipulation Because I noticed that the news media concentrated only on the site at the visit and the dancing fraternity, never commenting on the make up of the crowd at a predominantly black campus. It feels disingenuous bordering on smoking mirrors.
