in a two person race, what matters is piling up the delegates. in a multi-person race like hte republican race this year, it matters if someone like cruz can tell rubio's supporters he has no chance so they have to vote for cruz then there is some snowballing until the field shakes out. hillary and bernie are not going to get any windfalls from someone dropping out, they are going to have to earn their delegates one at a time. this is hand to hand combat. it is clear that if the green line keeps going up much longer, the race will be effectively over.
