The Myth of "Important" States Smashed (Hill's Group)

When Hillary swept the south, her wins were dismissed. "A Democrat can't win there in a general election anyway."

Never mind that these states are filled with Democrats who fight the good fight on a daily basis, against odds.

Never mind that these are voters who go out and vote for Team Blue, only to see their preferred candidates lose locally and statewide.

Never mind that these are Democrats that live under the thumb of Republican rule.

Through all that, they persevere, only to have supporters of one of the 2 candidates running for the Presidential nomination of their party completely dismiss them.

It was always insulting and ridiculous to dismiss those voters because they went for Hillary. To dismiss them as second class citizens.

As disgusting as that narrative was, the real problem is that narratives built on a false premise (that primary votes somehow translate into a general election, something no one serious believes) is that it will invariably collapse. And in the 2012 general election, there were only 4 states that were under 5% in terms of margin:

Guess who won all of them in this Democratic Primary?

DU forget that even in the South, the tide can swing if enough of the base shows up in a GE. I respect Sen. Sanders, but he needs to reach out to not only the Indy vote, but the traditional base. Against a Trump, even in these red states, I believe the base will turnout in a GE in a significant way to do their part to combat his hate.

Georgia was 7.8% in 2012 for Romney. Michigan was 9.5% for Obama.

Georgia is more in play than Michigan in a general election. Not to be dismissed at all.

Even with a PBO there were still millions of potential voters in the base who did not vote in 08 or 12. With demographic shifts in some of the "red" states (Texas, GA, etc.), these states can and will change soon.
