Two years ago, I buried my son, Dontre. He was sleeping on a bench in a public park, not bothering anyone. And then he was shot 14 times in broad daylight by a Milwaukee police officer....................
Dontre's death might have garnered the most attention, but his killing was only the latest in a series of preventable deaths of young, often African-American, men and women.
......................
The more I learned about the preventable deaths of so many of our sons and daughters, the more frustrated I became. After a rally in solidarity with Michael Brown's family, I realized I had to do something furtherthat I couldn't let Dontre's death be in vain. Shortly thereafter, I started Mothers for Justice United.
Mothers for Justice United is a group of mothers and fathers, grandparents and friends who believe we need to stand up to systemic racism in the American justice system. We recognize the difficulties police officers face in doing their jobs. We simply want accountability for wrongful actions. We want common sense, meaningful reforms. We want justice to truly be equal.
In this upcoming election, only one candidate for president shares our passion and commitment to reforming the criminal justice system. I know this because only one candidate is personally speaking out for me and the other mothers of this movement.
Hillary Clinton was there for me. At a time when it felt like I had nowhere to turn, Hillary reached out to me, she sat down with me in Chicago, she wanted to hear our stories and she helped us draw attention to a crucial national conversation.
I immediately felt her compassion and empathy. She didn't present herself as someone running for president. She spoke to us as a mother herself. She asked us what our children were like. She let me cry on her shoulder. She told us she would fight for a fairer America. And, unlike so many of the political promises I have heard from others, I know that Hillary means it.
As a law student, Hillary went......................

(6,551 posts)We just have to get her elected. I think there's a difficult road ahead, more difficult than we like to think. Bernie is getting a free ride because the media refuses to vet him. That's my main concern.
Anyway, heads up!
