Hillary Clinton
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders hasn't released his tax returns! Any ideas why??????
He been asked several times on national TV and even Trump has come up with better excuses. Hillary has released 8 years worth and Bernie's campaign has used it to criticize her.
Why can't Bernie release his???? Is there something about them that would matter to primary voters??? Is he hiding something we need to know??? Does anyone really believe it's because "Jane is busy"?????
Maybe if we had a list of possible reasons we could compile them and figure out why he is, apparently, being dishonest about this.

(15,438 posts)released the full and complete 2014 Federal filing, and hasn't released any other Federal tax filing from years prior even though he's been in Federal gov't for 25+ years!
Barack Obama released all his Federal tax filings from 2000-2008 when he ran. He continues to release these.
Hillary Clinton has done the same, and continues to release the full Federal tax filings up to 2014.
Jeb Bush, for chrissakes has released his Federal tax filings! So did his brother, Duhbya, and even Dark Cheney.
So why does Bernie think he's special that he only has to release his 1040 Form that shows NOTHING.
What is he hiding? Why so secretive, " Not-so) Everyday Man"?

You can even click on the dates to see their entire Federal tax filings for that year. They even have copies of FDR's!
Bernie is still at ONE and it's just the IRS 1040 form, two pages, and nothing else. Even Newt Gingrich released a full and complete Federal tax filing!
So why hasn't Bernie?

(47,510 posts)ans Schedule C - business income - $4900, and CE - business tax.
spooky3
(34,462 posts)it suggests that they probably
(a) had very high income (they would then have deducted high state income taxes on sch. A);
(b) could have had high charitable contributions (on sch. A.);
or
(c) had at least one very valuable house (they would then have deducted high real estate taxes and possibly mortgage interest).
There is no shame in this - only shame if someone is being hypocritical about it.
question everything
(47,510 posts)Apparently they gave about $12,000 to charity and paid about $8,000 in Vermont income tax. As per Politico, they have a mortgage of less than $100,000 on a D.C. condo and also own a property in Vermont. Hard to see how the interest and taxes get them to an additional $30K+. Also, if they're deducting income and property taxes, wouldn't they end up paying the ATM at their income level?

(34,462 posts)I think they are subject to reductions between the Sch A subtotal and the Sch A amount they can deduct on page 1. So the original subtotal would be > 57000. On an AGI of about 200000, this seems high. What other Sch A expenses could they qualify for? Did they have a casualty loss?
The DC condo is probably worth a LOT more than the 100000k mortgage balance. My guess is that they pay 5000 a year or more in real estate taxes on it, plus some mortgage interest.

Of course, it is pretty obvious Sanders is a millionaire, like Hillary, who he has been bashing for being part of the "millionaires and billionaires" he is always railing about.
spooky3
(34,462 posts)a millionaire based on retirement savings and home equity alone, he would be a fiscally irresponsible person. They should have been able to save a lot, even if he never invested in the stock market or anything risky. (I'm not aware of any medical crises that would have outstripped their health insurance benefits or anything like that that could wipe out savings).
It's a little different to be a millionaire in your 20s, versus a retirement-aged professional person or couple who should have been saving a long time. A million dollars provides only $40000 per year in annual interest/dividend/other income (at the rate retirement planners say is on the high end of what you should expect to draw out).

(6,444 posts)Host Jake Tapper pointed out that rival Hillary Clinton has posted her returns for the last eight years online leading to considerable criticism about her income but Sanders has yet to post his.
Im kind of surprised that you havent gone further on transparency. You released the summary page of your 2014 tax returns, Tapper said. Hillary Clinton has posted on her website the last eight years of her personal returns, all of the returns. Before the New York primary will you match her? Will you post your full returns for the last eight years?
Sanders averred, saying his wife was responsible for their taxes and that there wasnt anything exciting in them.
You know who does our tax returns? My wife does our tax returns, Sanders began. Weve been a little bit busy late lately so we will get out as much information as we can but there aint going to be very much exciting in that. I get a salary from the United States Senate, you know, so theres not going to be anything new in it that there hasnt that people havent seen for the last many years, but we will get it out as soon as we can.
But nobody has seen them at all, I guess, is the point. And whether or not theres anything exciting in them, Tapper replied before being abruptly cut off by Sanders.
No. That is not true, that is not true, Sanders replied. Of course, we have released them in the past! Our financial situation, to the best of my knowledge, has not changed very much, but we will get out all of that information as soon as we can.

(92,303 posts)no problem giving them at least 20 years worth of returns.
While they may be trying to cover something up, without a doubt it implicates just how disorganized the Sanders appear to be, and that is perhaps even more troubling for someone running for President of the United States

I reckon he probably meets all three of these things. Tight-fisted, non- charitable guy... just like he appears. That's my guess.

(4,640 posts)it's not hard AT ALL to call up my past returns. I have the pdfs. Anyone asking for them could have them near instantly. One would think the higher up the income ladder, the more likely it would be that a person would retain and use a tax filing service and/or accounting firm.
So, the wife doing the taxes thing is an excuse. A 1040 summary is not a full return, as we all know. It's funny how she had time to give that, but not the entire return.

I wonder how much of his donor's hard earned money is going to straight into the Sander's family pockets this time, don't you?
"Since 2000, Sanders has used campaign donations to pay his wife and stepdaughter more than $150,000, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission.
His wife Jane OMeara Sanders received $91,020 for consultation and to negotiate the purchase of television and radio ads. Approximately $61,000 of that was pass through money used to pay for the ads, OMeara Sanders told the Bennington Banner. She kept about $30,000 as pay for her services.
Her daughter Carina Driscoll, Sanders stepdaughter, earned $65,002 from the Sanders campaign between 2000 and 2004, records show."

ETA: It was a hoot to watch the sudden conversion about right wing sources by Sanders supporters. Now that we've seen that, here is a source where his campaign admits it is true.
http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050414/NEWS/504140364/1002/NEWS01
"Rep. Bernard Sanders' wife Jane was paid about $30,000 from 2002 to 2004 for work on his campaigns, while his stepdaughter Carina Driscoll got about $65,000 over a five-year period ending last year, a Sanders aide said Wednesday.
Jeff Weaver, chief of staff to the Vermont independent, provided those totals amid reports Tuesday that about four dozen members of Congress had hired family members to work on their campaigns or with political action committees."

(6,444 posts)68. I'm just wondering how he was able to write his campaign a $1 million dollar check.
Being that he's the "poorest person in Congress", that's a huge feat. Where did that money come from?
Also, in 2006, Sanders wasn't as opposed to accepting PAC money. He accepted $10 grand from HillPAC to run for the Senate.
