My Reply to Greenpeace

Yesterday I received an email from Greenpeace:

I’d like to invite you to join a special community of people who are working to protect the environment. It’s called Greenpeace Greenwire, and it’s full of inspiring people who have learned that there’s strength in numbers — and are building power locally to make change.

Of course the email went on to say how great this organization is and concluded with instruction on how to join.

I replied in this manner:

Normally I would be very open to this invitation, but the widely publicized, unnecessary, and and totally unwise intrusion of one of your activist into the Democratic nomination race has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

So no, I must decline you invitation to join Greenpeace Greenwire. I'm sure that I can find other organizations that are fighting for the environment to which I can contribute money.

I don't know for sure that the activist and whoever recorded the video of her confrontation with Hillary were working together and publicized the video, but I strongly suspect that it was a set up and that is exactly what happened. People need to understand that actions have consequences.

..with the same question. Considering his acceptance of funds from the same fossil fuels groups as Clinton.
I also would have mentioned Sanders' sending radioactive waste to the poorest Latino communities in Texas.

I would like to know how Greenpeace could have overlooked such blatant disreguard for the earth & its people who must live with the decisions of for-profit radioactive waste dumps.
The decision was made & pushed through Congerss by Candidate Sanders & his wife Jane, who sat on the Vt Board that shopped for a location to dump Vt's toxic waste.

How can Greenpeace justify this?

Organizations like this one and another that readily comes to mind need to learn that you don't go out of your way to tick off friend and allies.

It's why I don't support them anymore, and haven't supported them for decades now. I've long ago placed them in the pile of Code Pink and PETA - extremes that are too extreme for my taste.

Instead of tossing it into the round file, you followed up with substance. People at these organizations really do read replies and you made a difference. I suspect Greenpeace and the activist were seeking free press and attention to the cause. A huge tactical error because they lost loyal Dems who might have otherwise supported them in the process. Not a good plan and very short sighted!

Imagine if instead they had a thoughtful and positive sit down with Hillary so she could explain her plans for helping the environment. Their donations would have gone through the roof. The problem with some organizations, Greenpeace among them, is that they seek the most press for their protests rather than plans.

Reminds me of what Barney Frank said about Bernie, "Alienates natural allies"!

....I assumed from the outset that this was a setup.

Not that this tactic is usually a bad thing -- I mean, what would the point be in boarding a Russian whaling vessel unless you let the world know as you get hauled off to the Gulag?

But this is a step very much in the wrong direction. A young activist got herself all worked up with lies, half truths, and smears and tried to have a gotcha moment with the leading Democratic candidate, who actually has a record of trying to ameliorate the causes Greenpeace cares about.

Does she think any of the GOPers would ever give a shit about her concerns? Does she imagine St Bernard's Unified Field Theory of Economics will magically solve them?

This does no credit at all to Greenpeace.

Hopefully this was simply the actions of a couple uncontrolled Greenpeace activists rather than the organization itself. Regardless, everyone needs to understand that I you assume to represent an organization or campaign, you actions have consequences for that organization or campaign. This is a lesson from which both Green Peace and Sanders supporters can learn.
