Bernie Sanders might be running for the Democratic nomination, but his campaign isnt exactly working in tandem with the party.
In the negotiations leading up to the April 14 CNN/NY1 debate in Brooklyn, the Sanders campaign initially requested that neither the New York State Democratic Committee, nor the Democratic National Committee be involved in any aspect of the debate, a source with knowledge of the discussions told POLITICO.
Ultimately, the issue was resolved, and the DNC will have the same level of involvement as in previous debates, though the state party will not participate in the debate.
Before the CNN debate came together on Monday, the Sanders campaign had actually committed to participating in a debate on ABCs "Good Morning America", with designs on the morning television show's large audience. But a few hours after the Clinton campaign informed the network on Friday that she would participate, Sanders pulled out, said two sources, including one network source.
Sanders and the DNC have long been at odds. Last week the campaign kept alive a lawsuit against the DNC after the party briefly shut off his campaign's access to shared voter data in December over the discovery that someone on the Sanders campaign had access data owned by Hillary Clinton. (The two sides had said they are working to resolve the issue outside of the court.)
The Sanders campaign has publicly stated that it believes the DNC favors Clinton. The leadership of the Democratic National Committee is now actively attempting to undermine our campaign, campaign manager Jeff Weaver said last year when the data breach was revealed.

(15,438 posts)We've got a few more months to go before he goes bye-bye. I hope, seriously hope, he'll feel the ramifications of his "clean campaign" when he goes back to the Senate. And may the DNC pit a strong Democrat against him in Vermont, too.

(1,353 posts)Especially for the closed primaries... The veil is lifting on his true intentions of running as a Dem... NY press will be relentless and his crankiness will increase...won't be good come debate night in his "home town"...

(1,968 posts)with that whine? He's presented no concrete evidence that The Man (er, the DNC) is gettin' him down.
Refusal of access to resources when unjustified would do that. Refusal because you just stole somebody else's data is not unjustified...
What, he didn't like the debate dates and times? Well, if they didn't highlight him very well, they didn't highlight her very well, either--and he's been doing all the news shows, so it's not like people don't know who he is.
Grr.
