Hillary Clinton to Call for Youth Apprenticeship Program

Hillary Clinton will on Wednesday call for a federal apprenticeship program as a path to reducing youth employment, aides said, her first new policy proposal since officially launching her campaign this week.

Speaking at a technical college in Charleston, South Carolina, Clinton will propose rewarding businesses with a tax credit of $1,500 for every apprentice they hire. She will say that the program would encourage businesses to take on more young workers.

Apprenticeships are a major benefit for workers who see large annual earnings gains, Clinton will argue, as well as a boon for businesses that receive a tax credit.

Clinton has been workshopping a series of policies set to be released this summer on a rolling basis that her aides suggest will amount to about one a week. She called this week for universal pre-kindergarten, but previewed that program in her launch speech on Roosevelt Island on Saturday.

Much of Clinton’s rhetoric and proposals over the course of the last two months has been solidly progressive: she has called for automatic voter registration, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and paid sick leave, among others.

This shit of unpaid internships that seems to prevail for anyone who wants to enter the working world post education is ridiculous. After strapping students with enormous debt from student loans, they expect them to work a year for free before they can get in the field.

Don't do the time, you are not getting a job.

Companies love having free workers.

When the economy tanked, employers hired people with significant experience for entry level jobs, knocking out of the market those in college, or just starting out.

My daughter was looking for entry level jobs and employers expected experience or they would even look at her resume. Volunteer work showing work ethic, was not even considered. There was no way for her to compete with people who were laid off and would do anything for a paycheck, even if it was above their experience level.

To those suggesting that Clinton is "nibbling around the edges" are just looking for reasons to attack her. Everything she does will be turned into a negative. This is a great idea and one of many that will help with unemployment.

very enticing for employers to hire from these colleges. Great idea, it will be a win win situation for the employee and employer.

the purpose of this program is to reduce youth unemployment, I would assume apprentices would be paid.
