Jane Sanders is being grilled, says she can't find the previous 8 years of tax returns. Must be at home somewhere.
Will provide link when can find one, just seeing this via Twitter.
Seems legit. LOL.

Just seems very odd that they would show that 1040 with all those dollars deducted without an explanation, i.e., the itemized form.

(47,487 posts)Meaning, she was talking about the 2015 return where they would be extra careful
We will never the the details of the $53,000 itemized deductions of 2014, unless the IRS would audit them. And even then, we will never know the outcome.

(27,995 posts)Halpern called her the family CPA, to which she replied, "well no it's Turbo Tax". When he asked when will she release them and she said she'll need to find time to go home to find them. She's just been TOO BUSY. But she assured him that there's nothing much in their returns and that they "are pretty boring." When he asked if they are simple returns, she said "Yes, simple returns".
He also said that the Clinton's have released 8 years worth of taxes and she said "well they've been in office all these years" to which Halpern said, Bernie's been in the House and Senate. She replied, "well every election we've released them". "I'll release this year's as soon as they're due. But can I have time to GO HOME first?!"
IMO, she seemed flustered and defensive.
edited:
She also said she's going to Italy with Bernie for a quick trip to the Vatican, they will leave after the debate and "come right back" on Saturday morning. "We have events there." And she said when you get an invitation to speak at the Vatican, "you don't turn that down."

(8,620 posts)It could be (a) they can't properly explain their relatively large (per the 1040 for 2014) Schedule A itemized deductions, (b) they have very few charitable deductions or (c) Perhaps Jane never really reported her $200K golden parachute as taxable income. Should be interesting.

(15,370 posts)when she said that they have released tax returns every election. http://www.factcheck.org/2016/04/sanders-evades-tax-question/
But our fact-checking colleague at the Washington Post came across a 1996 news article about Sanders 1995 1040 form. The article, which appeared in a Vermont publication called Seven Days, was headlined El Cheapo! and focused on the $1,369 that Sanders donated to charity. The article also shows that Sanders reported a total income of $125,842, claimed $25,372 in itemized deductions and paid $19,563 in federal taxes.

(14,919 posts)" For the kickoff of the 40th annual Chittenden County United Way fund-raising drive in Burlington, Vt., the sponsors considered themselves fortunate to have as guests Mayor Bernard Sanders of Burlington and Gov. Richard Snelling of Vermont.
But the charity workers heard the sort of things they wanted to hear from only one of their guests.
''I don't believe in charities,'' said Mayor Sanders, bringing a shocked silence to a packed hotel banquet room. The Mayor, who is a Socialist, went on to question the ''fundamental concepts on which charities are based'' and contended that government, rather than charity organizations, should take over responsibility for social programs. "..........
LisaM
(27,815 posts)"El Cheapo!"
It certainly does not fit in with Pope Francis' hope that we all become more charitable. Now, I do think that during Reagan's tenure, he slashed a lot of services claiming that the private sector would pick up the slack, so it has put pressure on private citizens to pay for things like research for diseases, mental health, etc., that IMO government would better provide. However, we have to live under the system we have.
The Vatican tie-in is beautiful.

(15,370 posts)We are extremely careful to keep reports for at least the most recent five years close at hand. Isn't there some requirement to do that in case of audit?
We store the others in labelled boxes. In fact, it was only a couple years back that I finally recycled returns from the 1970s and 1980s. It is probably safe to recycle the 1990s too by now.
That was rather a callous and dismissive answer. It indicates a troubling lack of attention to important details.

(67,782 posts)...have known this would come up.
Two things struck me about the interview that makes me think she's not the brightest:
1. She said that 30% of a candidate's delegates are superdelegates (?) Less than 15% of all delegates are superdelegates, so where does the 30% come from. I suppose she's taking all the pledged delegates and dividing them by 2, then including ALL the superdelegates, which would be "30%", but that's 30% of HALF the pledged delegates.
2. She said they'll release their tax return "when they're due". She's the one that has been doing them every year - is it a surprise that they're due this week? (actually a week from today, April 15 this year is a quasi-holiday so the deadline has been extended to April 18)
No matter how they cut it, the taxes are due before the New York primary, they should release them before that.
One other thing - a United States Senator has his taxes done with Turbotax???? If elected, does he expect to prepare his Federal budget proposal using IntuitBooks?
