Holding a Bible in her arms at the start of Holy Week, seamstress Maria Munoz waited patiently to visit the tomb of the man she considers another savior of humanity.
The 64-year-old said she had already turned her humble one-bedroom house into a shrine devoted to the late President Hugo Chavez, complete with busts, photos and coffee mugs bearing his image. Now, she said, her brother-in-law was looking for a larger house to display six boxes' worth of Chavez relics that her family has collected throughout his political career.
"He saved us from so many politicians who came before him," Munoz said as tears welled in her eyes. "He saved us from everything."
Chavez's die-hard followers considered him a living legend on a par with independence-era hero Simon Bolivar well before his March 5 death from cancer. In the mere three weeks since, however, Chavez has ascended to divine status in this deeply Catholic country as the government and Chavistas build a religious mythology around him ahead of April 14 elections to pick a new leader.

(160,542 posts)This looks like such a credible story, too. You can always count on Christopher Toothaker and everyone's Go-To-Source, good old Associated Propagandists.
If I ever saw a story imbued with a "religious" fervor, it's this anti-leftist crappola. Oh, those Chavistas are really a buncha dim-witted, insane, looney toones, aren't they? They can't be allowed to vote.
Time to call off the election and appoint the right-wing clown, isn't it? Let's send down the Marines, after we flatten the place, and install his sleazy, sneaky actual right-wing, US-servile ass, rat now!

(160,542 posts)the fact it has been totally managing public perception through propaganda for many MANY decades, creating false appearance to protect its own covert actions in overthrowing governments, murdering leaders and high-ranking people they see as stumbling blocks, I do know about my own country.
I know this country has used CIA people in news media for ages, some big information has been disclosed through exposure of declassified documents obtained through hard, HARD work, regarding Richard M. Nixon's use of CIA people, and millions and millions of US citizens' tax dollars in taking over Chile's news media to first, prevent Allende's election, then during Pinochet's filthy, sadistic dictatorship, to control everyone's perception of what kind of government he was running, while he kidnapped, tortured hideously, and murdered people only for their political beliefs.
I am aware, through information gathered by the Democratic Senator Frank Church's Senate investigations that the CIA has been actively participating in all the major US newspapers, magazines, electronic media for decades as well. I am aware that for ages the U.S. government, for LONG before Dick Cheney admitted the government was planting propaganda (untrue information) in newspapers abroad for a political advantage, that it was actually an old custom, which had NOT started during the Bush presidency.
Knowing this is going on, has been going on is what I care about. I can call this crap "crappola" with every conviction it IS true, and it's GOING to be true for a very long time until some big moral choices get made about what kind of country this one really wants to be.
Your squeaking, and attempts to "catapult the propaganda" don't faze me at all. Go right ahead. I have no respect for people who want to smear the very people in Venezuela who have suffered, who have struggled, who have been reviled, mocked, despised by the racist oligarchs who have controlled that country and their destinies and kept them living without hope, and without the merest comforts all this time before they finally elected someone who did something to start changing things.
I hope the best for them, and the worst for you rightists. That's it.

(2,035 posts)Mind you, the link I posted is from one of the most popular news sites used by Venezuelans. The article itself has a video regarding the crazy level of veneration people give Hugo.
Also, I'm not sure exactly how the US has anything to do with what the article says. It looks almost as if you started rambling on for no reason.

It's almost as if she doesn't even critically read anything, but instead just looks at the name of the author before she comments.

So this doesn't really surprise me much, just how the poor in Venezuela cope.

(1,954 posts)Interview conceded by former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso for Veja Magazine in 2002 - right after Lula won the elections and before he was inaugurated.
Q: "After the elections, don't you think that there is a sanctification of Lula?"
A: "Absolutely. I've seen something similar in Mexico. There, media transformed the elected president in a semi-God. Today, the system is not as authoritarian as Mexico, but there is a strong connection between State and media. Here, this is not the reason. The Brazilian media has a strong connection with society, not with the State. Since there was this strong phenomenon that was the election of Lula - someone that we used to think that couldn't make it - there was a strong impact. But there is a growing dangerous deification going on."

An article by Aparecida Torneros named "The popularity and the sanctification of Lula"

This is just another disqualification tactic of the voters. "They are irrational religious nuts!"

(160,542 posts)so they can plot to take over since they feel no need to respect the democracy by unqualified people.
In Bolivia, they claim the voters are too uneducated to be allowed to make decisions which affect their country.
In Washington D.C., they feel EVERYONE in the Americas and Caribbean is unfit to lead other than the puppets they put into power.
Didn't know they got that low regarding Lula da Silva. Not a bit surprised, however. They go lower in the right-wing media than anyone normal would ever consider. That's really dirty stuff, "the sanctification of Lula."
AND it's so STUPID. All propaganda is deeply stupid, meant to fool stupid people.
