Chilean consul's daughter shot dead (by police Spanish)

apparently at a police checkpoint the car didn't heed the police command to stop so they opened fire killing the 19 year old.

Caracas.- Karen Berendique, de 19 años, murió la noche de este viernes por herida de bala cuando supuestos funcionarios de Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas, Penales y Criminalísticas (Cicpc) abrieron fuego contra el vehículo en el que se desplazaba con otra persona.

La víctima era hija del cónsul de Chile en Maracaibo, Fernando Berendique Benavente.

Versiones extraoficiales indican que hicieron caso omiso a la voz de alto que les fue dada por los efectivos de seguridad. "El hecho ocurrió en un punto de control del Cicpc ubicado en la zona norte de Maracaibo, en las cercanías de Teostiste de Gallegos", precisó el medio regional Noticia al Día.

Indican además que al percatarse de la joven había resultado herida, los propios funcionarios le prestaron primeros auxilios y la trasladaron para que recibiera atención médica. Allí la ingresaron sin vida.

Global TV Zulia informó posteriormente que el Fiscal 45 del estado Zulia llevara el caso.

Se apuntó adicionalmente que la hija del diplomático se trasladaba con su hermano, quien relató que fue apuntado con un arma por un presunto efectivo del Cicpc.

....CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The 19-year-old daughter of a Chilean diplomat in Venezuela was shot to death by police at a road checkpoint early Saturday.

Fernando Berendique, Chile's consul in the western city of Maracaibo, said his daughter, Karen, was riding in a vehicle with her brother and another young man when she was killed.

He said the trio ignored a command to stop by police at the checkpoint, fearing the officers might be robbers. Violent crime is widespread in Venezuela.

Venezuelan authorities said the young woman was hit by three bullets.

Twelve police officers were detained and are under investigation for their roles in her death, the Justice Ministry said in a statement. It expressed condolences to the family and pledged that those responsible would face justice.

Judicial police chief Jose Humberto Ramirez condemned the shooting saying it reflected "bad police practices."
