Dear Walter and CubaNews friends,
Re: Notes on Canadians in Cuba and Island Prostitution
This story was released on the morning (July 16) and so far has been picked up
by 48 news outlets and blogs using the same headline. It has another 51
citations using variations on the headline.
What is the story? Juan O. Tamayo of the Miami Herald trolls TripAdvisor and
discovers a bunch of very recent, negative reviews posted anonymously. He then
reports it as news.
How do we know these anonymous reviews weren't planted in an effort to fabricate
a story? Such an approach is typical of the Miami Herald and its handful of
shill "independent journalists" in Cuba. Many of these "journalists" are in the
employ of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, rightwing NGOs in Europe, and
USAID (United States Agency for International Development), the latter of which
operates via rightwing anti-Cuba groups based in Florida and other U.S. states.
TripAdvisor has great reports on foreign destinations posted by smart, sensitive
travelers willing to sign their names to their stories. The site also has a ton
of schlock posted by unnamed sources; anybody can complain about any touristic
issue anonymously. There are zero guidelines in place to prevent abuse. The only
posts on TripAdvisor that should be taken seriously are those by contributors
willing to identify themselves.

(42,239 posts)I am appalled at the way in which it is expressed.
I am not saying that it isn't noticeable that a few elderly , particularly German, men have visibly got lady friends seemingly parked on the island who they visit a few times a year from what I could make out. The hotels are generally "all inclusive" with guest tagged and the Cubans accompanying those men are tagged too i.e paid for hotel guests. The wrist tags are purely to identify whose who for the food and drinks.
The chances of the Miami halfwits putting off the numerous Canadians, European , Russian and these days Chinese tourist too with this propaganda is fortunately nil.

(160,598 posts)I heard people saying years ago that there are far, FAR more sex workers in Miami.
The time when Cuba had a glut of people employed this way was when the U.S. used to use Cuba as one of its R & Recreation spots. There are still all kinds of photos of US military personel striking poses all over the place there in various stages of sobriety.
They used to even have booklets for US tourists and military types showing where all the hot spots were.
Miami is obsessed with trying to affect the success of Cuba's tourism. One could say they stepped over the limit when they started hiring poor men, women from Latin America to take in bombs and place them in hotels, restaurants, nightclubs. Their bombers take all the risks for them in that phase of their war on Cuba. It's a real shame when the bombers get caught and put in prison and the ones who hired them continue to sit on their pathetic asses in Miami, sipping their little Cuban coffees at the Versailles.
