Mujica on Snowden and US-Latin America relations

Mujica on Snowden and US-Latin America relations
07-16-2013 14:44 BJT

Our reporter Daniel Schweimler has had an interview with Uruguay’s president, Jose Mujica, in La Anchorena. In the interview, Mujica talked about US fugitive Edward Snowden, and Bolivian president Evo Morales’ plane row. He also spoke about US-Latin America relations.

Jose Mujica, the president of Uruguay, met us at his rural retreat, La Anchorena, the day after hosting a summit of the regional trade bloc, Mercosur. The dominant theme there -- the American whistle blower, Edward Snowden, and whether a Latin American country should grant him political asylum.

"Political asylum is as important as a religion. It’s one of the fundamental human rights, with all the errors of judgement that can be made. As an institution, humanity must defend political asylum." said Jose Mujica.

Related to the Snowden case was the refusal by several countries in Europe to allow the plane carrying the Bolivian president, Evo Morales, to use their airspace, under suspicion that Snowden was on-board, a response that caused great indignation in South America.

Looks like all of South America will be flung under the bus.
We are going to need a bigger bus.

but never all at the same time!

The big pattern in the past was to pick them off individually, dividing and separating them, and there wasn't the unity most of them are seeking now. They really are trying to unify the Americas, so it stands to reason the U.S. will be trying as hard as possible to create schisms, favoring some over the others, providing incentives to some while punishing others, just as in the earlier days.

During George W Bush's presidency, great efforts were made to try to lure Brazil's Lula da Silva, and Argentina's Nestor Kirchner away from their support for Hugo Chavez, which went over like a lead balloon with those men, who told the Bush people where to put their meddling concerning their colleague.

The US State Department, the Pentagon never sleep. They'll never give up working against the leftists.

It's going to be safer under the bus. We have made ourselves the worlds enemy, and the world will oblige us until we develop a better attitude.

I dont think Obama will really do anything. Evidently Snowden upset the big shots running the NSA and they don't want other employees running away and telling secrets. But I don't think they'll throw anything under a bus. It seems to be mostly baloney. Evidently the Russians can get Snowden to Venezuela using a nuclear sub, but I did notice Raul Castro is keeping really quiet. I wouldn't expect Snowden to fly via Havana.
