Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Havana, Cuba, Oct 23.- The Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) carries out over 60 clinical trials in Cuba for several diseases, among which cancer stands out –the first cause of death in the country since 2012, asserted an expert in this capital.

In an exclusive interview with ACN, Doctor Mayra Ramos, head of the department of clinical trials of that institution –pertaining to the business group BioCubaFarma-, announced that new therapeutic vaccines and monoclonal antibodies are being developed there.

Cuba has registered a monoclonal antibody, NIMOTUZUMAB, for patients suffering from head, neck and brain tumors, both children and adults, and also of cancer in the esophagus.

The CIM studies, together with the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials, have also proved the efficacy of therapeutic vaccines registered in Cuba for the treatment of lung cancer CIMAVAX-EGF and Vaxira, and they’re also developing other clinical trials with these immunogens in prostate, breast and colon cancers.

The specialist announced that they expect to register the monoclonal antibody called ITOLIZUMAB soon, for severe psoriasis, and new clinical trials are described in diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis and other diseases.(acn)
