Ecuador lawmakers suspended over abortion 'betrayal'

Three members of Ecuador president Rafael Correa's ruling party have been suspended for backing moves to ease the country's strict anti-abortion laws, officials said Tuesday.

The ethics commission of Correa's Alianza Pais (AP) announced one-month suspensions for the three legislators who had advocated decriminalizing abortion for rape victims.

AP official Galo Mora said the three lawmakers -- Paola Pabon, Gina Godoy, and Soledad Buendia -- would be replaced for one month by alternates.

"The sanction is based on a failure to comply with express agreements which were reached with fellow legislators," Mora said.
